Listening to his sets out to capture the stories on paper. He is a Mann, Grandpa reminds him daily, and thus destined for greatness.

Through the tales of his ancestors, his own experiences, and the unforgettable characters who enhance and enliven his adolescence, Billy learns of bravery and cowardice, of life and death, of the heart's capacity for love and for unremitting hatred, eventually grasping the meaning of family and history and their power to shape destiny. Steeped in imagery and threaded with lyricism, Eddie's Bastard is a novel of discovery, of a young man's emergence into the world, and the endless possibilities it offers.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eddie's Bastard Have the wisdom to choose this absolutely delightful tale of the Mann family, and enjoy the characters of Billy and his grandfather as they fumble though life starting out, starting anew, and trudging onwards. So you think you have troubles? Read on....There is a sequel in hardcover I can hardly wait to see in trade paperback - and then I shall most certainly be one of the first to purchase the continuing saga. First rate diction, wonderful encompassing tale and a dream story to read, I was indeed very taken by this novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Uplifting This book needs to be recognised for its quality. I received the book as a gift and ended up reading it until morning. Eddie's Bastard is a generational saga that is uplifting. You root for all the characters, because no single one is simply evil or good. Kowalski's writing vibrates with life -- I hope he writes a sequel.
