Rated 4 out of 5 by from You want to read the whole series! The first chapter had me hooked. I love a book that opens with action and intrigue. Already my mind was racing ahead trying to figure out where the story was going to go. I felt like it took a few chapters to establish the background, and I was tempted to skim them since they felt a little slow compared to the first. I’m glad I persevered though because the story really picks up again. If you need a bathroom break, take it around chapter five because once you get past there, you won’t want to put the book down. The main character, Gabriel, was a surprise. I knew from the back of the book that he was going to have a freak encounter with “Eden’s Ore” but what I didn’t expect was how that would change him. He begins the novel as a 20 year old farm kid with no sense of direction and ends up being forced into a hero role with a clear sense of direction. A very clear sense. He takes it on rather begrudgingly at first and we get to witness his personal growth. There are, of course, a few other subplots going on during the course of the novel, but in my opinion it all comes down to the classic good versus evil. Naturally I root for the good side to win, but with this journey it was never clear who was going to remain standing at the end. There is more-than-adequate resolution for this story, but the author has clearly set us up for the next book. And maybe more after that? I shed a few tears at one point – a pretty good sign that I was actually engaged with the characters and I look forward to seeing where they all are at the beginning of book two. Bottom line: I saw this whole book play out in my mind like a movie. The blend of the story and the way it was told made for fantastic action in my mind. I would love to see it on the big screen one day. I would definitely recommend this novel to anyone looking to get their “toes wet” in the Sci-fi genre and to those that are already established fans. It does not disappoint.
