about

Can imaginative Emily make her biggest dream come true?

Spunky Emily Bartlett lives in an old farmhouse in Pitchfork, Oregon'at a time when automobiles are brand-new inventions and libraries are a luxury few small towns can afford. Her runaway imagination leads her to bleach a horse, hold a very scary sleepover, and feed the hogs an unusual treat. But can she use her lively mind to help bring a library to Pitchfork?

Adventure is pretty scarce in Pitchfork, Oregon. So why shouldn't Emily bleach Dad's old plow horse or try some of her other ideas? "Written with Cleary's customary warmth and humor...The time of the story, about 1920, is delightfully brought to life."-BooklistAdventure is pretty scarce in Pitchfork, Oregon. Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love it It's an awesome book for 9 nine year old girls. It has so many adventures that you would probably love. Some pictures but not many. I like books like that. It lets you think which ever way you want to about the charracter. Books like that give you an open mind. Your imagination runs away too. My favourite part is when she feeds the apples to the pigs. Good book. Also funny. READ IT!

From Our Editors

Back in Depression-era Oregon and in the tiny town of Pitchfork, there isn’t a whole lot to do. So that’s why Emily manages to get into trouble for such crazy ideas as bleaching her father’s old plow horse and many other antics! Once again, popular children’s author Beverly Cleary creates a female character with sass and spirit in Emily’s Runaway Imagination, an acclaimed young adult title from the author of the beloved Henry Huggins books.

Editorial Reviews

"Emily is vividly real." (Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books)
