This book, filling an editorial gap, provides a comprehensive treatment of the emplacement mechanisms of nappes and thrust sheets. In the first chapter the basic concepts of thrusting are explained and a short overview of thrust geometry is presented. In chapter 2 the problem of the emplacement of nappes is discussed in its historical framework. The mechanical and kinematical models of nappe emplacement are presented in chapters 3 and 4. In the final chapter a number of examples from the Alpine chain is analyzed. Audience: This volume can be considered as a reference work of the utmost value for Earth scientists in general and can be used as a graduate text for courses addressing displacement geology.
Olivier Merle is a specialist in the relationship between deformation and displacement in nappes and thrusts. He has worked at the University of Arizona (USA) on thrusts in the Colorado Plateau and has carried out experimental research at the University of Texas at Austin. Olivier Merle was awarded the French CNRS Bronze Medal in 1992....
