Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointment Very disappointing. I had been thinking for a while that I needed to read more books on Chinese history and culture and thought this would be my first dip in that pool. Unfortunately it was not a good one. While the language was very poetic it was very hard to follow and the story often jumped around so thirty years passed in the blink of an eye and then it would go back again fifteen years then ahead seven. None of the characters were appealing especially the main who put me off most of the story through her arrogance and violence and none of what she accomplished seemed like it was earned. With that said it will not put me off more exploration of Chinese literature and I acknowledge that the culture clash may have played a part so that is why it has those two stars.
