about

Gossip Girl meets the Gilded Age in this delicious and compelling novel, the third in the New York Times bestselling series from author Anna Godbersen.

In the thrilling third installment of Anna Godbersen’s bestselling Luxe series, Manhattan’s most envied residents appear to have everything they desire: Wealth. Beauty. Happiness. But sometimes the most practiced smiles hide the most scandalous secrets.

Jealous whispers. Old rivalries. New betrayals. This is Manhattan, 1899.

Two months after Elizabeth Holland’s dramatic homecoming, Manhattan eagerly awaits her return to the pinnacle of society. When Elizabeth refuses to rejoin her sister Diana’s side, however, those watching New York’s favorite family begin to suspect that all is not as it seems behind the stately doors of No. 17 Gramercy Park South.

Farther uptown, Henry and Penelope Schoonmaker are the city’s most celebrated couple. But despite the glittering diamond ring on Penelope’s finger, the newlyweds share little more than scorn for each other. And while the newspapers call Penelope’s social-climbing best friend, Carolina Broad, an heiress, her fortune—and her fame—is anything but secure.

“Mystery, romance, jealousy, betrayal, humor, and gorgeous, historically accurate details. I couldn’t put The Luxe down!” —Cecily von Ziegesar, author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Gossip Girl series

Anna Godbersen was born in Berkeley, California, and educated at Barnard College. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York, where she is at work on the sequel toThe Lucky Ones.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not the best in the series, but still good I read this book within a day. While it wasn't my favorite book in the series, it was still well written and I really loved some of the characters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from hmmmmm This was still a good read that I poured through in no time, didn't have that same wow factor that the other two did I still enjoyed it, I think this was more of a book of information of unfolding the timelines to a possible next book that will bring this back up to the previous two. Still will read the next installment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good... but definately not the best of the Luxe series! Well… Although the story line continues to be quite exciting, I was a little bit disappointed about the paths the characters took in this novel. It was a good book, but I find the events to be less dramatic and especially less exciting that what was going on in Rumors and the Luxe. Personally, I believe this book, Envy, feels more like a “transition” period for the characters. The plot, in general, was a little slow. Compared to its predecessors, Envy did not manage to pull the feeling of mystery and suspense you get in the Luxe and Rumors. This doesn’t mean Envy wasn’t good at all. The story continues to be exciting and entertaining. Penelope Hayes, or Penelope Schoonmaker, now married to Henry Schoonmaker, tries and tries and tries to trick her husband into bed. He’s not willing to do that just yet; being still completely in love with Diana Holland. And Diana can’t do anything about it. She’s still in love with Henry and hurting; even though she tries to let go. In the other hand, when you start feeling some hope for a beautiful love story to be born between Elizabeth Holland and Mr. Teddy Cutting, the storyline takes you through a totally different path. Because a couple of the men decided all of a sudden to join the army, the story takes quite a weird path, which I, personally, was not expecting at all. The book was still quite entertaining in spite of the absence of more dramatic events and more passion. Although I was surprised and a bit disappointed, I will still read book n° 4, Splendor. As I said, the story line continues to be quite exciting and dramatic. I’m hoping that Splendor will bring back this drama, sentiment and passion that the Luxe and especially Rumors had.
