about

My disease is as rare as it is famous. It's a form of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, but basically, I'm allergic to the world. I don't leave my house, have not left my house in fifteen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives. New next door neighbors. I look out the window, and I see him. He's tall, lean and wearing all black--black t-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly. I want to learn everything about him, and I do. I learn that he is funny and fierce. I learn that his eyes are Atlantic Ocean-blue and that his vice is stealing silverware. I learn that when I talk to him, my whole world opens up, and I feel myself starting to change--starting to want things. To want out of my bubble. To want everything, everything the world has to offer.
Maybe we can't predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It's almost certainly going to be a disaster.
NICOLA YOON grew up in Jamaica (the island) and Brooklyn (part of Long Island). She currently resides in Los Angeles, CA with her husband and their daughter, both of whom she loves beyond all reason. Rated 1 out of 5 by from Disappointed I read quite a bit of young adult fiction and had high hopes for this book but was really disappointed. It was very predictable but at the same time unrealistic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing I first saw the trailer and knew i just had to read the book. It was amazing. I loved all the characters and it was very well done

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Short read The book is a cute read that can be read in one-sitting. However, I feel that the story was rushed at the end and Maddy's escape was pretty unrealistic. I also wish that story focused more on Maddy's cultural background. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing book I loved this book so much. Still feels like I sometimes still am in their world!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good, Quick Read This book was super hyped up when I read it, which is honestly never a good thing. But, I still enjoyed it. I read it in about four hours straight and a friend of mine (an exchange student who had only been speaking English for about ten months) read it in eight hours. So, all in all, its a very quick and easy read. The writing style is really unique and the romance story line is super cute. It might be a little cliche and tropey, but not in a way that over does it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good, quick contemporary 3.5 Everything, Everything is one of those quick read books where you make yourself a pot of tea, grab a blankie, and settle into the couch for the afternoon. Equal parts heartwarming, and heartbreaking you become connected to the characters and genuinely care about their well-being.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything Everything I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is a pretty quick read and it's a cute story. I have to say the ending could have had a little more to it, it seemed a little rush. But it was a good plot and I'll probably read more of Nicola Yoon's novels after reading this.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from good read the book is better than the movie; however, I did enjoy both
Date published: 2018-07-24
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh It's super predictable and pretty much unrealistic. I had to suspend my disbelief quite a lot to get through this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great summer read! I really enjoyed this book, I couldn't put it down and ended up reading it in an afternoon! it's amazing to see the world from the point of view of someone who can't/hasn't truly experience it and the relationship between Maddy and Olly is everything!
Date published: 2018-07-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Totally impressed. My new favourite book! Throughout my reading of this, I cried, I laughed and I figuratively spat out my drink. I was expecting a nice coming-of-age story with a love interest but I was super surprised at how amazing and well-written this book was! I finished it so quickly because I could NOT put it down I loved the story and the characters so much! I have to admit, there were times when it was cheesy but I personally look for that kind of stuff in a book like this so I enjoyed it You know when you fall in love with a character? Alongside Maddy, I fell in love with Olly too (Not gonna lie, this book gives you high expectations in a relationship for sure lmao) I seriously loved this book and I wish that I had read it earlier! Also, the illustrations on the cover as well as throughout the novel are BEAUTIFUL so that's also a plus

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such A Great Book I read Everything Everything a few months ago and I'm so happy I did! I adore the love story between Madeline and Olly and how they moved from a disaster zone to a wonderful paradise all thanks to their love, trust, and desire for one another. I would definitely recommend this novel to a friend.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Eh Easy book to read that would be a good book for the summer, but I found that it was hard to pick up the book to read it as it was not keeping my attention.
Date published: 2018-06-23
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable I predicted the twist ending, which rarely happens, and the romance was kind of cringe worthy.
Date published: 2018-06-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great It's such a lovely book in my opinion. There wasn't much I didn't like about it. It made me happy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book is amazing! “Everything Everything” By Nicola Yoon was hands down one of my favourite reads! I fell in love with the characters in the first couple of chapters. Their quirkiness and interesting personalities really pulled me in. Nicola’s writing style for this book was interesting, and I actually quite liked it! I am looking forward to hopefully seeing more books written in this format! This book is about a young girl named Madeline who has a disease which unfortunately makes her unable to take a step outside her home. One day a family moves in next door. Their son really catches Maddy’s attention! By reading this book you get to witness her possible friendship with him and everything else in between. Will she really risk it all for love? Find out by reading!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy Read I really enjoyed the storyline of this book. It's an easy read but it's still very enjoyable and cute.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from a new favorite !!! a new favorite book of mine it was really good and had a big plot twist that i so didn't expect it was a really good book from start to finish
Date published: 2018-05-16
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Predictable It was a very easy book to read. Also very predictable. You knew what was going to happen next. Not a page turner kind of book.
Date published: 2018-05-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Engrossing yet Predictable To be completely honest, I have mixed opinions about “Everything, Everything” which is why I am giving it a 3-star rating. On the one hand, I was unable to put this novel down, a result of being absolutely engrossed by Yoon's prose. The latter mixes personal and touching writing, detailed character development, complete descriptions, simple yet effective sentences, quirky illustrations and recognizable content—similar to Gayle Forman's “If I Stay” which makes for quite a delightful read. However, I was downright let down by a predictable punchline, which, I believe, beat the whole purpose of this work of fiction. Then again, perhaps that was Yoon's intention?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this book! I bought this a while ago and I keep rereading it. Way better than the movie. It was a new and unique love story that gave me all types of butterflies and emotions. The plot was great and I found this story to be very cute. Perfect for a teenager who likes cute romances.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! I absolutely loved this book! It was a quick and easy read but it kept me wanting more! I couldn't put it down at times! The author did an amazing job and i loved the little pictures and doodles it had! I was not expecting that ending at all but i was very pleased with it. Needless the say this is my new favourite book!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Sweet But Predictable This book is sweet but nothing new or even particularly exciting.
Date published: 2018-04-28
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Cute contemporary I really enjoyed this book! It was quite predictable, yes, and sometimes things were way too easy, yes, but it is a cute read and there was extra content such as drawings and little snippets of this or that in it that I loved. If you are looking for a quick, light read to raise your spirits, this is for you!
Date published: 2018-04-28
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cute but for Teenagers... This book is cute, but very predictable... good for young teenagers experiencing first love.
Date published: 2018-04-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quick Read This was a quick and simple book. I felt like some of it was a bit far-fetched, and a little predictable. But overall it was enjoyable.
Date published: 2018-04-09
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not So Much Maybe 2.5 stars??? It wasn't terrible, and the first third of the book was wonderfully cute. The layout was fun and I was enjoying it. But I just did NOT like the way story progressed. Absolutely everything about the story was just TOO easy and I found myself rolling my eyes at it quite often. It continued to progress in unrealistic and easy ways and it frustrated me. I also wasn't a fan of the ending. Both the twist and the last chapter bothered me for many different reasons. The writing itself was good, and the characters were cute... but... just.... ugh. I might consider reading another book by this author in the future, depending on what it's about, but this one didn't do it for me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing book Loved the story! Kept me reading! I'm not the type of person that frequently reads books, but I really enjoyed it the whole time I was reading! #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing novel Overall all a very endearing book. The second I started reading this novel, it was hard to put down. If you enjoy books with wording that helps with visualization, this is the book for you. I highly recommend this book for teenagers who are not interested in books, because this novel was worded in a way that truly made it seem like a movie. This was an overall amazing book (yet I did tear up at the end!), and was certainly not boring at all.
Date published: 2018-04-03
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great I loved the simplicity of it. The main character Maddie was very real and relatable. The writing itself was great. Absolutely loved the ending!
Date published: 2018-03-31
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sweet Read I enjoyed the book. It was not complicated or too intense. It is about a bitter sweet relationship with multiple barriers. Do they overcome their obstacles? Well, it is up to you to read! I really enjoyed the book, although I do wish the ending had more of a conclusion, it was okay but I expected more. Except for that, I definitely recommend this book.
Date published: 2018-03-29
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Kind of predictable I was excited to read this book but in the end, it was predictable and I was hoping it would be different from the rest of the typical teen stories.
Date published: 2018-03-27
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Simple but Sweet The writing style of the book was very plain and simple, but I did enjoy the different point of writing style (computer, doodles). The book was easy and quick to read. The ending was surprising (if someone didn't spoil it for me) and overall the story concept was pretty much what you expected but I still enjoyed it. Really simple but sweet story about love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SO GOOD I went into this book not knowing what exactly to expect and let me say this, I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED. The characters were all amazing, the detail ohhhh myyy gosshhh it was amazing. The plot was original and unique, and I loved the diversity between Maddy and Olly! Nicola Yoon is an exceptional author and I can't wait to read more from her.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing read I honestly read this book in a couple hours because I could not put it down, I was absolutely intrigued to find out what was happening in the next chapter after I read the a couple chapters. it was a captivating read, and honestly when you pick it up and start reading you'll be unable to stop. You instantly fall in love with every aspect of the book, and I was bawling my eyes out at some parts of the book because it was written as you could visually see everything happening in front of you, or as if you were living in the characters shoes. Definitely a must read!
Date published: 2018-02-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good and Bad While the storyline itself held little of my interest, the interactions between the characters was telling. Also the details drew me in. By the end of the book, I wanted the sunroom.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I enjoyed this book I finally got around to reading this book. It's easy to read and well written. The ending was a surprise to me. Sad, yet happy. I enjoyed it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book!! I'm not big on reading but this book made me want to keep reading! This book was a great read and it was very well written!
Date published: 2018-02-02
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good. From the very beginning I knew I was going to like Everything Everything. The dialogue was snappy and fantastic, the chemistry between Madeline and Olly felt so genuine and heartfelt, and the added multimedia flowed well with the rest of the story. The love these two had didn't feel rushed or forced, despite the circumstances. Any time they were in close proximity of each other my heart stopped and I couldn't breathe because I felt such strong feelings for them. The climax and conclusion of the book didn't sit well for me, however. They felt rather abrupt and I was surprised when I suddenly ran out of pages to read. I think I understand what Yoon was doing with that climax, and it's really the only way things could have progressed, but something about it just felt lackluster for me. Nevertheless, I really enjoyed Everything Everything and am so happy I finally picked it up. I'm DYING to see the movie now because Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson are some of my favourites at the moment and I can just see them making this story amazing on screen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than I expected! I honestly tought that this wasn't going to be that great. It was a really good story, very well written. Think it could have a little more details at some moments but in overall it was a good book that surpassed my expectations!
Date published: 2018-01-11
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Everything, Everything Okay first I have to say that I love love love the cover and all the illustrations throughout the story! In my opinions it made this 10 times better. I think that the drawings really added to the story. Nicola Yoon created characters that practically burst from the pages. You can seriously see their personalities just jumping from the page. I loved the interaction between all of the characters as well. Maddy and Olly’s email conversations are just the best! I also loved the interactions between Maddy and her nurse Carla. I just really enjoy when an author makes the characters so real. Everything, Everything is a story that is so unique. I’ve never seen anything like it. I loved getting to know about Maddy’s disease. It’s such a refreshing and interesting story to get to learn about. One of my favorite things is the fact that Maddy is actually half African American half Japanese. I love getting to see diverse characters in novels. While I did really enjoy Everything, Everything there were some things that did bother me. I thought it was rather unrealistic that a young teenager could get a credit card for one. For two, how many people would just book a flight and go to Hawaii with someone they don’t know very well? In my opinion it wasn’t really realistic for Maddy to be locked up for so long with just her mothers diagnosis. Another thing that really bothered me was Olly’s dad. I’m sorry but if I was in a position like Maddy was I would have called the cops or done something. I sort of expected the ending to go the way it did but it didn’t stop me from wishing there was more to the story. I wanted to know about her life after. All in all I did really enjoy Everything, Everything and I would recommend it to someone looking for a cute Summer read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A nice book to read! Its a quick read; I read it in one day! A nice teenage romance book for anyone that's a fan of John Green style books!
Date published: 2018-01-08
Rated 4 out of 5 by from An emotional read The perspective of a sick main character was pretty interesting. We follow Madeline's development and how she lives in her bubble. The thing i did'nt like is when a guy enters in the girl's life, he changes her. NO. The girl needs to change her situation by herself.
Date published: 2018-01-07
Rated 3 out of 5 by from ok everyone had been telling me to pick this book up, and I had super high expectations. However, when I actually read it, I realized it was NOT worth it

Rated 3 out of 5 by from it was alright After watching the trailer for this movie, I immediately went out to buy this before I watched the film. I expected it to be cheesy, like many of these types of chick lit novels are, but my emotional heart still gave it a shot. But despite the little plot twist at the end and the semi-intriguing characters, this book fell kind of flat. It was pretty predictable which made the rest of the story seem kind of empty. However, saying that, it was a fast and light read so it was a considerably entertaining despite my problems with it. I would say read it if you are like me and like to read the book before the movie, but if im being honest, you won't miss much if you don't read it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from MY FAVOURITE CONTEMPORARY I loved Everything Everything. It is a beautiful story about finding yourself. It is beautifully, and lyrically written, and I absolutely love the formatting inside the book. Olly is so high up on my fictional boyfriends list, I can't even describe how much I love him and wish he was real. Madeline is also a fantastic narrator. I felt for her situation, and understood her like I'd known her my whole life. It's something about Nicola Yoon's writing, I just connect so well with her characters. Also Nurse Carla is possibly my favourite side character I have ever read about. I would highly recommend it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from GOOD I did like this book quite a bit.. BUT I did have some problems with it.. I knew exactly what was happening by page 150. After that the book seemed pretty predictable. The romance aspect was nice. But still a little odd to me. Very good concept for a book. Maybe the movie will be better?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this I bought this book when I was in the middle of moving houses and could not put it down. Accidentally left it at the old house on a trip to the new one and couldn't stop thinking about what would happen next. Great story, kind of unrealistic but that's okay since it's..FICTION! Love the cover, it will stay on the front of my book shelf forever :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I was a good romance I loved the book. It was a well written contemporary novel that is equal parts sweet and heartwarming. There were some cheesy bits, but nothing too bad. The plot twists were good and surprising. If you want to watch the movie, read the book first, as it has so much more to it than the movie offers.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from strange... It was well written, however it was lacking something...believability! (I know it's fiction, but you'll understand if you read it!) I picked it up to read since my daughter has many allergies and wanted to pre-read it before giving it to her so she could possibly relate to something. I don't think I will share it after the crazy twists that happen. It was strange on many different levels.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK Cute and easy read. But I did feel that it was a little cheesy and the 'plot twist' was a little ridiculous.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from loved it! I loved this novel! it was a pretty quick read simply because it is formatted so perfectly and it was so good I couldn't put it down. I loved the storyline and I especially liked the focus on characters of colour, being biracial I don't read about many characters similar to myself so this was a refreshing read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Makes you feel good on the inside! The story is kind of cheesy and the ending was unbelievable in a predictable way, but it's the type of story that makes you smile whenever you read it and restores your faith in love.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Called it! This is the perfect angsty romance read for teens. A story about the intensity of first love, and forbidden love. For me, it was really cute and sweet, but completely transparent, for me. I guess I'm not really the target audience, though. The plot/ending/"twist" was glaringly obvious to me, almost from the very beginning. Maybe that's because I'm older, or maybe it's because of my medical background...whatever the reason, I saw right through it. Also, I'm not completely satisfied with the ending. Without spoiling the plot for others, I don't think there were enough "consequences" meted out at the end; some things were glossed over, and quick forgiveness was emphasized just a little too strongly for my comfort. That doesn't mean I didn't enjoy the read, though. It was a sweet, quick, entertaining read; just not one I will swoon over, or put on my 5 star list. I finished and handed it off to my teen daughter, assuring her that she will love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best YA Contemporary of 2015 I loved Everything Everything, possibly even more than the first time I read it. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little mix of "The Fault in our Stars" and "Eleanor and Park" This is your average teenage love story with it's sarcastic humour and cute teenage love your 13 year old spirit craves. Maybe I would've liked this better if I were a tween again but as a 17 year old its very "been there done that". The ending has an interesting twist however.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Predictable and Cheesy Teenage Story This is a really easy book to read. It basically follows the same pattern as every other book marketed towards teenagers and young adults, and as such, I found it to lack originality.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read This was an easy read! Although I loved the story, it was a little different, I just though the movie brought the characters to life a lot more than the book. Good quick read though.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lovely, but not groundbreaking. Nicola Yoon doesn't surprise in this effort, but she does deliver a solid, engaging story. I enjoyed the way Everything, Everything uses short chapters, illustrations, and transcribed text messages to effectively flesh out the constraints of Maddie's world and her blossoming connection with Olly. It's a charming story of first love and family bonds - well worth reading.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Unexpected This book was not at all what I thought it was going to be when I picked it up. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to most things and this book is not that. But it was unexpectedly charming. All the doodles, different typefaces and fonts used throughout made it a fun and endearing read. While the basic love storyline was predictable, there was another plot line with a twist that came out of nowhere near the end! All in all this is a really sweet and funny novel (and much better than the movie!).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Meh. I'm not one for teen romance books in the first place, but I will admit this one had it's moments. The author perfectly illustrates the characters' hopes, dreams, and desires. However, it seemed...unrealistic in my eyes, and a little forward at times. But if you like gushy love stories, than I'd give it a go; chances are, you'll like it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First love in a bubble that bursts I had to read this book before I watched the film adaptation, both of which were good, but the book was lovelier. The concept of a girl with an autoimmune disease who has never left her house because of it reminded me a little of Emma Donoghue’s Room, only way less severe. Nicola Yoon writes brilliantly in first person; Maddie is a likeable and intelligent character despite being physically cut off from the world. Olly is a wonderful match for her and their love story is very sweet. Her first experiences beyond her bubble reminded me not to take for granted that I can go outside whenever I want. I also really liked the drawings scattered throughout the book.

Editorial Reviews

SELECTION: Miami Herald Best Books for Children, 2015PRAISE FOR Everything, Everything:"In her debut, Jamaican-American Yoon gives readers complex characters and rich dialogue that ranges from humorous to philosophical. This heartwarming story transcends the ordinary by exploring the hopes, dreams, and inherent risks of love in all of its forms." --Kirkus Reviews"Everything, Everything tells us something we will always need to hear, no matter our age: that it's not the risks of love or heartbreak that might end us. It's the fear of the pain we might experience along the way that keeps us trapped in our cocoons—or our white, decontaminated houses." --The New York Times Book Review"One of the most buzzed-about titles of the year. And, holy smokes, it's worth the hype. . . . Quietly profound, stoic and wry while still being both romantic and sad; think American Beauty meets Love Story with an ending that is both original and satisfying. MGM optioned the movie rights before publication so this is poised (deservingly) to be the next big thing." --The Globe and Mail"YA book lovers, your newest obsession is here . . . [Everything, Everything] is a quick, delightful read that plays on multiple mediums throughout, and it features a line-up of diverse characters with intriguing sets of complications and interests." --MTV
