about

This document presents the proceedings of a FAO technical workshop on the growing need to transfer land-based/coastal aquaculture production systems further offshore as a result of expected increases in human population and competition over access to land and clean water--key resources needed to increase availability of fish and fishery products for growing human consumption. Mariculture and in particular offshore aquaculture offers significant opportunities for sustainable food production and development of many coastal communities, especially in regions where the availability of land, near shore space and freshwater are limited. The document includes a global synthesis, four reviews and two case studies (Hawaii and Chile). The proceedings are written for governments, ministries, research institutions and private sector bodies interested in promoting and supporting development of off-the-coast and offshore aquaculture, and it attempts to provide a comprehensive review of the main issues specific to this subsector.
