about

When a savage creature known only as the Adversary conquered the fabled lands of legends and fairy tales, all of the infamous inhabitants of folklore were forced into exile. Disguised among the "mundys," their name for normal citizens of modern-day New York, these magical characters created their own secret society that they call Fabletown. From their exclusive luxury apartment buildings on Manhattan's Upper West Side, these creatures of legend must fight for their survival in the new world.

Fables is the winner of 14 Eisner Awards and is one of the most enduring Vertigo titles ever. Here, in this new, 10th anniversary edition, is a newly colored 8-page story from the Fables prose work Peter & Max: A Fables Novel, as well as a beautiful new cover from series artist Mark Buckingham.

Bill Willingham is the award-winning writer and creator of Fables. He has been writing, and sometimes drawing, comics for more than twenty years on titles including Elementals, Coventry, Proposition PLAYER and Fables. With Matthew Sturges, Bill co-wrote the Fables spinoff Jack Of Fables, as well as House Of Mystery and Justice Society ...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Entry in Comics Not only was this the book that created my interest in reading comics, it was the book I used to get my girlfriends into comics 5 years later. An interesting take on the classic fairy tale characters we know, presenting them in a fleshed out well thought out world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Also great for "non-graphic-novel-readers" Bought this for a class at Uni, and I'm so glad I did. I don't typically read comic books or graphic novels, but this was fun. Poking fun at fairytales, but also embracing them at the same time. My only complaint is that it's too short! Great art, fun storyline.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put it Down Amazing comic series with a unique concept! It's a really fresh twist on the old-time fables, and brings a whole lot of life to the fantasy genre.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth picking up Absolutely ingenious world, fusing all kinds of stories we grew up with. This book is an interesting introduction into a much broader world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from loved it love it when fairy tales are written with a twist it hope theres more to come and it never ends

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Series packed full of Imagination This was a series I would religious collect every month. I loved the art, I loved the idea of fairy tale character living among us. The writing was smart and fun and every novel was new and had different themes or a focus on a different character. The first collection is still finding its voice (reminds me how the first Sandman novel is SO different than those that followed) but is still fun. It is a mystery of sorts - Who killed Red Rose? And we get introduced to some characters who will be the focus for the rest of the series - especially Wolf and Snow White. Great start to a great series. My only caveat is...this series went on too long. I found myself losing interest after volume 10 or 12. That's still a great run but something to mention.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Fairy Tales You Grew Up On... But With a Twist! This series completely changes the way you view the fairy tale characters you grew up on. A smart concept that does a great job of developing characters and developing a storyline you need to follow to see what happens to all your friends in Fabletown. It's like Grimm Fairy Tales and Game of Thrones created some odd offspring. And it all starts with Volume 1 - Legends in Exile

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I enjoyed this so much I ordered the next 2 volumes and can't wait to read them! I'm relatively new to comic books or graphic novels but recently I have been really enjoying them. I've had a life-long love for fairy tales, myths, and legends so when I was looking for new comic books it was only natural to choose Fables. As an adult I still love a good fairy tale or fantasy but am even more impressed with reinterpretations, new twists, and modern adaptations. Fables is just that - a series about fairy tale characters who live in modern times and appear as average people. I was so glad that I took a chance on this volume and actually felt disappointed that I had finished it and had no more to read. I ordered the next two volumes and am really looking forward to reading them.
