Makeup, as we know it, has only been commercially available in the last 100 years, but applying decoration to the face and body may be one of the oldest global social practices. In Face Paint, Lisa Eldridge reveals the entire history of the art form, from Egyptian and Classical times up through the Victorian age and golden era of Hollywood, and also surveys the cutting-edge makeup science of today and tomorrow. Face Paint explores the practical and idiosyncratic reasons behind makeup’s use, the actual materials employed over generations, and the glamorous icons that people emulate, it is also a social history of women and the ways in which we can understand their lives through the prism and impact of makeup.
Lisa Eldridge is one of the most respected and experienced makeup artists in the industry. She has worked on the faces of some the world's biggest and most glamorous stars, including Kate Winslet, Keira Knightley, Lily Collins, and Emma Watson, and with international publications such as Vogue, Elle, LOVE and Harper's Bazaar. Having pr...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth Your Money A fantastic mix of beauty and history. From the very start you read on things like historical pigments like red and black, flowing trough time periods and countries, and the ideas of makeup and how they have changed over the course of history. The wording never gets too difficult for those who are not accustumed to this type of reading, the pictures are gorgeous, ranging from modern and avant garde to historical replications of real world art and sculpture, giving a proper illustration of the authors words; the older advertisements are quite fascinating. The binding is solid as well and the paper thickness is great for the amount you purchase this book for, all in all this is a solid purchase and I may never need another makeup book again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Obsessed This book is on my coffee table because it is just too pretty to be hidden away in a bookshelf and also because it is such an incredible book! I'm a history buff and a lover of all things beauty, and this book is the perfect mix. I recommend this book even if you're not into makeup, it is well written with stunning photographs and you will learn a lot. Lisa Eldridge is such a talented makeup artist and if you're a fan, this book is a must!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gorgeous I couldn't really ask for much more from this book. I'd have liked if it was even longer, but I do think enough was covered to get a pretty brief history of makeup. This is full of beautiful photos of vintage makeup, advertisements, and celebrities. I hope Lisa Eldridge writes more books in the future, as I'd love to see a product-focused book, or a photo-heavy one chronicling her inspirations or favourite makeup artists.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Read it! I loved it soooo much!!!! I bought this book a few days ago in store because I heard about it online and seemed quite interested. If you are looking for a book about "How to apply lipstick" or "How to apply the basic make up", this is not your book. A good way to sum up this book its basically about the history of make up and it was amazing! This book was fantastic! It had great visual picture that applied to the text and of course the book that were both original as well as photos/portraits of people from the past. The text was written quite simple which I am happy about since I knew nothing about make up before I read this book. I do wish the book was a bit more organised at the beginning because I was trying to get my timeline straight of what occurred and when. But other than that I read this book in a matter of days and will reference a lot in the future of what I learned. Read this book!!!!
