about

Once upon a time, there was a girl who wanted to be pretty . . .

Aza's singing is the fairest in all the land, and the most unusual. She can "throw" her voice so it seems to come from anywhere. But singing is only one of the two qualities prized in the Kingdom of Ayortha. Aza doesn't possess the other: beauty. Not even close. She's hidden in the shadows in her parents' inn, but when she becomes lady-in-waiting to the new queen, she has to step into the light—especially when the queen demands a dangerous favor. A magic mirror, a charming prince, a jealous queen, palace intrigue, and an injured king twine into a maze that Aza must penetrate to save herself and her beloved kingdom.

Gail Carson Levine is the author of the Newbery Honor Book Ella Enchanted; New York Times bestsellers Ever and Fairest; ALA Notable Book Dave At Night; The Wish; The Two Princesses of Bamarre; the six Princess Tales books; the nonfiction book Writing Magic: Creating Stories That Fly; and a companion to this picture book, Betsy Who Crie...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from another winner by miss levine! after reading "ella enchanted" recently i wanted to try other books by the same author. i absolutely LOVED this book! such a fun and unique perspectively on the classic "snow white" story. would definitely recommend for students in grade 4 or higher!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Fairest This was a good quick read. I didn't like how the story focused so much on the beauty aspect of Aza and really wished for more story. I was really disappointed in the end about it finding out who Aza's birth parents were. I thought it would have been the queen of the gnomes and it would have turned out she was a princess this entire time, but I guess we will never know.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good read. Perfectly written for teens. An interesting take on an older fairy tale.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book! This is based on Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, although Levine makes the fairy tale completely her own in this book. I like Ella Enchanted a little better, but this book is nearly as good. Young teen girls are most likely to enjoy this book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from meh not one of gail carson Levine's good books. Overall, it was very confusing and the plot was hard to follow. I couldn't understand the characters at all even after reading it a couple times.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not good Convoluted story, unlikeable and flat characters. Really disappointing, as my favourite book is Levine's "Ella Enchanted." For a better Snow White retelling, check out the Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read! Levine has done it again! Although I love Ella Enchanted this one is not at the same level. Still a great read and still worth people's time but if you're expecting the same greatness from Ella Enchanted then no luck. But still worth a read
