“Shannan’s story feels at once familiar and spectacular, ordinary and exceptional. You will discover that at the same time her words make you squirm, you will wish you lived next door to her. You will want her wisdom and you will want her pickles.” —Jen Hatmaker (from the foreword)

Shannan Martin had the perfect life: a cute farmhouse on six rambling acres, a loving husband, three adorable kids, money, friends, a close-knit church—a safe, happy existence.

But when the bottom dropped out through a series of shocking changes and ordinary inconveniences, the Martins followed God’s call to something radically different: a small house on the other side of the urban tracks, a shoestring income, a challenged public school, and the harshness of a county jail (where her husband is now chaplain). And yet the family’s plunge from “safety” was the best thing that could have happened to them.

Falling Free charts their pilgrimage from the self-focused wisdom of the world to the topsy-turvy life of God’s more being found in less. Martin’s practical, sweetly subversive book invites us to rethink assumptions about faith and the good life, push past insecurity and fear, and look beyond comfortable, middle-class Christianity toward a deeper, richer, and ultimately more fulfilling life.

Shannan Martin, known for her popular blog Shannan Martin Writes, is a speaker and writer who found her voice in the country and her story in the city. She and her jail-chaplain husband, Cory, have four funny children who came to them across oceans and rivers. They enjoy neighborhood life in Goshen, Indiana, a place they fall more in l...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Reads like a Friend What a sweet, relatable, honest, and funny read. It does not surprise me that Jen Hatmaker wrote the forward for this book because Shannan Martin's style of writing and personality really reminds me of Jen. I am not saying that in a negative way either! I just find both of them similar. In this book, Shannan has short personal essays discussing her life and either the joy or the challenges (sometimes a combination) she encounters. Her own stories read as really relatable to the "average" person. Sometimes while reading religious/Christian books an air of superiority can be felt from the author. This was absolutely not the case with Shannan. She admitted she's not perfect (none of us are). Also, I liked the layout, flow, and style of Shannan's writing. It was easy to just keep reading. I'm also glad that she broke down scripture and even when she quoted it, she also explained it/used examples for better understanding. For those who love to read Jen Hatmaker, Lysa Terkeurst, and Glennon Doyle Melton, I highly recommend you give this a look over/read as it resembles all of their personalities through humor, style, and ability to relate.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like a wake up call from your BFF Shannan Martin's book "Falling Free" is excellent. It is funny and heart-breaking, challenging and encouraging. I normally fly through books but I wanted to read this one slowly and give my heart time to catch up to all that God was speaking to it. Shannan does not say that "her" way is the only way nor that her story should be your story. She merely shares the journey that God has brought her family on. I believe the Holy Spirit does the rest as your heart is ripped apart in all of the best possible ways. Make sure you grab a box of kleenex when you add this book to your cart.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellen Read!! Shannan Martin has the ability to stop you cold with the truth of her sentences. Truths that make you ponder how you view your own place in the world. Shannan shares her story of being called to love her neighbors in a way that she never expected to be called. She trusted God and took the leap! We can't all live the life Shannan is living, but we can certainly take some of her wisdom hidden in these pages and apply it our own lives.
