Falls medicine is a new specialty, and there are few books on the subject for medical staff, and none for the general public. Falls are an important subject. One in 8 patients in hospital is there because of a fall. 50% of people over 80 years fall every year. They are the main reason oldpeople have to attend an emergency department, and the main reason that they have to go to live in care homes. This is the first book to attempt to cover this subject comprehensively, including the medical, the nursing, therapy and social aspects of falls. This book will cover all aspects of falls in the elderly, explaining why they happen, what the common consequences are, and what should be done to prevent them. It is intended for patients and their families, but will also be of value for health professionals at all levels. It is written in simple language and assumes no medical knowledge, and no medical terminology is used without an explanation.
Dr Darowski trained in Cambridge and London. He was appointed as a Consultant in East Berkshire in 1989, and ran a Falls clinic in East Berkshire from 1995 until he came to Oxford to develop a new Falls Service in 2001. He is a Consultant Physician at the Nuffield Department of Medicine at Oxford.
