about

&#8220So many things in the book resonate: the sorrows, struggles, and challenges, as well as the guilt and despair &#8212 and, through it all, the surprising and amazing presence of love and joy &#8212 that come with being a parent of a child with a disabilty.&#8221 &#8212 JIM TRIANTAFILOU, Executive Director, Brampton Caledon Community Living

&#8220... a true story in several senses ... true to life in general, true to family life in particular, and true to medicine ... a wonderful book.&#8221 &#8212 GERALD TAYLOR, M.D., Mississauga, Ontario

During the first few weeks after Matthew Kirk was born &#8212 brain-damaged as a result of oxygen deprivation during delivery &#8212 the doctors advised his parents, Donna and Ed Kirk, to put him in an institution, have another baby as soon as possible, and get on with their life.

But what the doctors didn't understand was that Matthew "was" their life. Indeed, as he grew, he would surprise everyone with his athletic good looks, spirited personality, and supreme ability to create joy and love as so many people gathered around to help him through his physical and mental struggles.

Now, with the publication of this clear-eyed, laugh-inducing, and heart-tugging book, Donna Kirk recounts the story &#8212 the "love story" &#8212 of how she and her family found Matthew, and how he found them.

Donna Kirk is also the author of short stories, which have been published in "The Daily American," "Ars Medica," "CommuterLit," and "The Quick Brown Fox." She lives with her husband, Ed, in Oakville, Ontario.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An inspiring story told from the heart What a book! I started reading on Sunday when my visitors left and couldn't put it down. It made me laugh, it made me cry and everything in between. It is beautifully written and it tells such a powerful story. What a treasure Matthew is and what a wonderful person you are. I admire your bravery in sharing all these personal things. It made me think about how much we take for granted. As I finished the book I drank a glass of wine and raised a toast to you. Keep on writing, you do it so well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Journey "Finding Mathew" takes the reader on a journey into the life of one very courageous man and the amazing family that loved him. This book not only shares his story but forces you to reflect on your own life's challenges, and in that, reminds you to be sympathetic, gracious and humble. Dona's commitment to her son and the advice she shares is valuable to anybody who tries to navigate the crazy world of parenthood, never mind those who parent special needs children. Whether I was laughing or crying, I thoroughly enjoyed every page.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A MUST read! Finding Matthew was a true pleasure to read. To start, the entire book is a page turner that never disappoints. While I experienced every emotion possible and even cried during several chapters, there was a lot of humour as well. Matthew Kirk was an inspiration and a fighter in every way. Matthew had no problem expressing himself even though he could not speak. While reading along the author made me feel as though I were right there in the room experiencing their achievements, their sorrow and the unconditional love this family had for one another. I often found myself speaking aloud during my read, expressing real admiration for Donna and Ed and rooting for Matthew every step of the way. This book reminds me to stand up for what I believe in and cherish my children each and every day. Donna makes me want to be the best mother I can be for my own children! Great book. One I will cherish forever!!
