BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The Measure of the Magic.

Horrified by the misuse of magic they had witnessed during the First War of the Races, the Druids at Paranor devoted themselves to the study of the old sciences, from the period before the collapse of civilization a thousand years before. Only the Bremen and a few trusted associates still studied the arcane arts. And for his persistence, Bremen found himself outcast, avoided by all but the few free-thinkers among the Druids.

But his removal from Paranor was not altogether a terrible thing, for Bremen learned that dark forces were on the move from the Northlands. That seemingly invincible armies of trolls were fast conquering all that lay to their south. That the scouts for the army--and its principal assassins--were Skull Bearers, disfigured and transformed Druids who had fallen prey to the seductions of the magic arts. And that at the heart of the evil tide was an archmage and former Druid named Brona!

Using the special skills he had acquired through his own study of Magic, Bremen was able to penetrate the huge camp of the Troll army and learn many of its secrets. And he immediately understood that if the peoples of the Four Lands were to escape eternal subjugation they would need to unite. But, even united, they would need a weapon, something so powerful that the evil magic of Brona, the Warlock Lord, would fail before its might...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A good read I think this book wasn't as exciting because I'd read the original trilogy and basically this whole book was explained so I knew what was going to happen before it happened. But I read it anyway because this was where it all began. Still a very entertaining read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great fun to look in on old friends I have been reading this series off and on for the past 30 years just finally got around to this one and thoroughly enjoyed every page. I of course knew exactly how it would turn out but still smiled every time something of the past or the future was revealed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Great Read! As a long-time reader of the Shannara books, I was very excited to read this one. "First King of Shannara" doesn't disappoint, allowing you to explore the world as it was before the time of the first set of books. Yes, it does drag a little in certain spots, but justifiably so, at least in my opinion. This is definitely one of my favorites in the Shannara series, and I'll certainly be reading is again.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from First king of shannara First book of his I've read and the beginning of an adventurous read. I love this genre when laced with elegant prose, we'll developed characters and battle scenes painted with such colour I can hardly believe that I am totally immersed in a fantasy.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from didn't hold my interest i gave this book like 4 months to catch and hold my interest and it didn't which was disappointing because i have read some of his other novels and they were amazing but this one just could not hold me. It was written ok but i think the lack of action in the beginning and the characters were kind of bland. i am sure they would have eventually caught my attention but i read the first 150 pages (and normally it takes me now time at all to read that much) and i couldn't have told you the first thing about them. anyways i suggest trying this series only because i know the other books he has written but if your not feeling it after the first couple of chapters don't waste your time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Purely Amazing I just finished reading this book. It was definitely the best of the Shannara series, and after reading every book in the series, this one answers a lot of questions I had. Also Terry Brooks develops characters and information about the world to come in the other books very well, and has shocking events, well at leats if you read this last out of the series. I loved this book more then all of the others he wrote. My fav character was Jerle

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First King - Awesome The First King of Shannara is an epic adventure suited for anybody with an active imagination. I say this because Terry Brooks takes you deep into the life of the characters within this novel. Bremen, Kinson, Mareth, Tay, Risca, and Jerle. They are all well developed characters that take you deep into the story. Bremen a druid that travels the Four Lands and discovers dangers no other knows about. Risca and Tay also Druids that take on there own little adventure to aid Bremen in his quest to defeat the Warlock Lord. It is an awesome novel, i suggest readin it before any of Terry Brook's other novels, it's the Prelude to the Shannara Trilogy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful Read For Terry Brooks' Fans "The First King Of Shannara," is an excellent read for anyone who has enjoyed the other works of Terry Brooks. Anyone who has enjoyed "The Shannara History," will enjoy learning about the events which occured before the series, with the life of "Bremen;" Allonon's father. It gives a great insight into the world of "Fairie," before the "History Of Shannara," series. A good choice and excelent read.
