Be careful what you ask for. You may get it! That's the message in this delightful tale of five youngsters who discover a bizarre sand creature that grants wishes. There's a catch, of course: the wishes come undone at sunset, and worse yet, things often get out of hand!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from full of fun and adventure This book is lovely. I hadn't read it as a child myself but am enjoying reading it to our 8 year old. He is finding the older style language a bit challenging at times, but mostly he is loving the imagination and thinking of things he would wish for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fun and Imaginative Tale "Five Children and It" is a children's book by E. Nesbit. The story is over 100 years old, but still in print because it is as enjoyable a tale today as it was back then. Four children find a fairy in a gravel pit that has the eyes of a snail, head of a rat, ears of a bat, furry body of a spider, and hands resembling a human's. He grants them a wish every day. You'd think this would be a wonderful continuing experience, but bad things always happen no matter how carefully they word their desires. Imagine reading a book about the times of kings and knights and wishing your house was a castle. That would be magnificent if it didn't come with armour-clad, heavily armed soldiers surrounding your home, ready to attack at any moment. Much fun and many mishaps will keep the young and young-at-heart turning the pages of this timeless classic.
