Rated 4 out of 5 by from Stands the test of time I was honestly a bit shocked when I saw this on the Chapter's site! I have a tattered copy that is decades old, which I'd forgotten about and haven't looked through in years. That's not to say it's not a good book, I just happen to have a lot of them! To be honest, I can't remember when the last time I used it, but I would recommend it for a beginner cook or baker. It has lots of great tips, the recipes are simple and traditional and stand the test of time.

I have inherited over the years --- Many Cook Books I have at least 25 , as I Love to cook and bake, but not so much anymore as I am retired . .. Thank you for allowing me to tell my story !!.

Handwritten in the front cover was The Recipe For A Happy Home. Us daughters have continued the tradition by gifting a copy to our families as shower gifts. May the tradition continue for a very long time.

My grandmother had this book, my mother had two editions and all her daughters (4of us) got this cookbook and still to this day is our basic everyday referral cookbook. Wonderful recipes for all the basics. Love it, bought one for all my children and now finally replacing mine as it is so worn and used and buying one for my step daughter to have as well. A fabulous present for any family, especially young families. Also costly for used copies of originals on ebay.

My Mother first introduced me to Five Roses A Guide to Good Cooking and it has been my go to source for receipes and cooking hints for the past 40+ years. I just purchased two, one for my daughter and an extra one, to have on hand. I won't be replacing my copy as it has many ear marked pages and hand written receipes throughout..with so many memories.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone should have a copy This was the first cookbook that I was given when I got married 41 years ago. It gives all the basics. My original copy is missing pages and many are so discoloured from use that I cannot read them very well. When my children got married I couldn't find this cookbook. Most of the books out there are not basic. Try and find a regular cook book that will give you the recipe for 'Standard pastry'. I was so thrilled to find this book at Chapters that I have purchased one for me, my children and one for my niece who is getting married next spring. Thank you so much for keeping this wonderful cookbook alive. All young people starting out today should have a copy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential to any kitchen This is an excellent source for Canadian Cooking. It is my favorite gift to anyone setting up housekeeping for the first time. I bought my first copy back in 1968 when my husband and I set up our apartment, and I have gone through 2 copies since then. Ingredients are local, techniques are easy to follow, instructions are very basic. Along with the Canadian Living Cookbooks, or Jean Pare's series, you are well set to cook successfully.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great cookbook My Mom gave me this Five Roses Flour Cook book when I was married in 1969. Five Roses taught me how to cook. It answered all my questions especially the substitution and the equivalent measures section which I still use. When my husband started cooking he also referred to Five Roses. There are several recipes my three sons have when they want to make a great Lemon Loaf or plain pancakes that taste better than anyone elses. I visited this site in hopes of purchasing my 3rd Five Roses Cook Book. My original is so worn, tattered and covered with ingredients especially chocolate on the Brownie page and my second book which I purchased in 1987 is almost as worn. I was dissapointed to see that a new book is not available and the used books are very expensive that I will have to make do with the books I have and treat them with more care than in the past. Rated 5 out of 5 by from A great one for everyone. I have been using this cookbook since I was 16 yrs. old , my sister in-law had the blue book and still does without the cover. I have bought this book when ever available, which is not often here. I have learned to cook for my family and they loved all that I could do. I always recommend it to my children and have tried to buy others. My youngest daughter is just in pre-med and asked me which cookbook I would recommend (she is not a cook), I am sure that she will learn from this one because, even though I am over 50 yrs. old I still rely on this one. I lived with my oldest daughter last year and our house burned down. I had bought her the lastest one at the time. We always rely on the recipes that are in this book. Of course she has them memorized.. My youngest daughter asked me for a donut recipe that we have made a Christmas thing we have been doing for a long time. I could not remember the recipe but it was taken from the White five roses cookbook that got used so much it is not anywhere only in pcs. So I bought the brown one but lost in the fire. My sister-in-law has a copy of the blue one but refused to lend it out because of it's age. I know she still has it but is getting older. It has no covers. Well used over the years. l was only wanting inquire about a NEW Five Roses Cookbook, because it has taught a lot of people over the years. From way back when, all the women (and some men) in my family have used some edition of this book, each with the best of information for its time. Mine is so worn out from use (and full of chocolate and flour... oops) that I have to buy a new one. I'm just so thankful that there are still some out there to be had, as the company that made them has closed.

How to make pie crust, scones, tea biscuits, bread, soups, stews, boil an egg - all great recipies made with the kitchen basics. This is the one book to own & enjoy ... and pass on to your children.
