Rated 5 out of 5 by from An amazing story unlike anything else in the Epic Fantasy genre This was the first book by Craol Berg that I ever read, but it was certainly not the last! I have read everything she has written to date, and this novel is still one of my favourites. Berg combines intricate plot weaving with realistically flawed characters in a tale so full of twist and turns, you cannot imagine what will happen next and yet afterwards you looks back and shake your head at how well it all holds together. This novel was unlike anything I'd encountered in the epic fantasy genre before, or since. This is the tale of Valen, a pureblood sorcerer who does not adhere to the strict rules of the Registry whom govern all magic users. Besides his nonconformity, Valen is also addicted to doulon, a paste made from nivat seeds, that releases euphoric pleasure when triggered by magic and pain. Unsurprisingly, Valen is seen as a stain on his good family's reputation and is unhappily caught up in the war of succession that is tearing the once peaceful kingdom of Navronne apart. There are conspiracies and lies, dark plots and surprising twists, princes, ordinaries and magical fae like beings call "Danae". This book sets the standard for how epic fantasy should be.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed I really enjoyed this story and would recommend people give it a read. Valen the protagonist is a pureblood that does not answer to his family or registry which labels him the black sheep in his family. He lives contently in a monastery until unfortunate events turns his peaceful, content life upside down.
