Rated 3 out of 5 by from Mixed feelings The main characters, Emily and Olivia, are a mismatched pair thrown together by a series of circumstances that have them spending large amounts of time together. Emily’s son Henry charms the pants off Olivia (and this reader) when they meet and Olivia’s assistant Simon does the same to Emma; both secondary characters allow Olivia and Emily to see the other in a different light so they can see each other beyond the surface. There are light moments with Simon and Henry providing the comic relief most of the time, and tension when Emily’s self-reliance clashes with Olivia’s good intentions (that do not always translate well in her actions). There is a sense of realism in the way they’re written as they struggle to understand each other and find common ground but the ending left me disappointed and unsatisfied. The story was originally written as fanfiction but as a stand-alone work of fiction, the characters lack adequate background and dimension leaving them flat rather than multi-faceted and, as a result, more difficult to fully relate to. I read the book quickly, losing track of time over the course of two days, wanting to see what would happen next and I hope the satisfaction and other elements I was missing in this book will be found in its sequel, Grounded.
