Rated 5 out of 5 by from Authentic and entertaining! An enthralling account of growing up in rural Newfoundland in the 1950s and 60s. But not just any rural town in Newfoundland. This is the unique, enchanting, isolated community of Barr'd Islands, Fogo lsland. I laughed. I cried. And I better understood my father. Yes, Jim Combden is my dad. About 6 months after Fogo Island Boy was published, dad passed away. But during his 18-month journey through cancer (I say 'journey' and not 'battle' because dad enjoyed life to the fullest right up 'til the end, with very little sickness), he managed to finish this book and bask in its glory for a while. For that we are very thankful. My 10-month old son, Max, will never remember Poppy Jim. But through the magic of the written word, this book will give him a wonderful glimpse into the heart and mind of his grandfather. The book's mischievous but endearing protagonist, Isaac, is undoubtedly the one and only Jim Combden. His voice has been silenced, but it speaks to us forever through Fogo Island Boy. What a legacy to leave behind. What a gift.
