about

Another of Twain’s travel works, Following the Equator (1897) is a much darker book than many of Twain’s others, as it was written at a time of financial trouble and personal loss of his beloved daughter Susy. The book is a very politicized account of a lecture tour around the world, with stops in Australia, New Zealand, Ceylon, India, Fiji, Mauritius, and South Africa. In humorous but often biting anecdotes, Twain reports on subjects ranging from bush life in Australia to the culture of the Maoris in New Zealand. He also lashes out at social inequities such as racist imperialism connected with gold mining in southern Africa and the Indian caste system.
