Fans of the Divergent trilogy by #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth will be thrilled by Four: A Divergent Collection, a companion volume that includes four pre-Divergent stories plus three additional scenes from Divergent, all told from Tobias's point of view. This collection also makes a great pick for fans of the blockbuster movies who want to delve deeper into the character played by Theo James.

Readers first encountered Tobias as "Four" in Divergent. His voice is an integral part of Allegiant. Readers will find more of this charismatic character's backstory told from his own perspective in Four: A Divergent Collection. When read together, these long narrative pieces illuminate the defining moments in Tobias's life. The first three pieces in this volume—"The Transfer," "The Initiate," and "The Son"—follow Tobias's transfer from Abnegation to Dauntless, his Dauntless initiation, and the first clues that a foul plan is brewing in the leadership of two factions. The fourth story, "The Traitor," runs parallel with the events of Divergent, giving readers a glimpse into the decisions of loyalty—and love—that Tobias makes in the weeks after he meets Tris Prior.

Also includes three additional scenes from Divergent, told from Tobias's point of view!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant I loved this so much, it was amazing seeing things from Four's life before Tris was in it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enjoyed Four's Perspective! <b>Note:</b>Sorry if my summaries give to many spoilers. I don't think they do. Simply because all of this information you should know by reading the Divergent Trilogy. You just don't know how or why it happens, which this book explains. If you want to skip the summaries my thoughts are at the bottom. <b>Summary:</b> This is a book with four short stories that were never in the Divergent trilogy, because it is in Four's perspective. <b>Story #1: "The Transfer"</b> This is a story about Tobias Eaton becoming Four. In this story he still lives with his father Marcus in the Abnegation community. You hear what abused he had to go through with his father and why he chooses to become Dauntless. You follow him through the first stages of initiation where he first became Four. <b>Story #2: "The Initiate"</b> This just continues on with Dauntless initiation and rankings. Four makes friends and enemies along the way. <b>Story #3: "The Son"</b> This story goes into Four finding out he is "Divergent". You find out when he first expected Eric to be helping his roots, Erudite. And how that effects him becoming a Dauntless Instructor rather than something in great power. You get the story of how he choose his Divergent tattoo and how he found out his mother was alive. <b>Story # 4: "The Traitor"</b> Two years after Four's own initiation, Four is responsible for the new transfer initiates (Non-Dauntless initiates). This is where he first meets Tris and develops feelings for her. He is still investigating Dauntless and Erudite working together. When he discovers some information, he finds himself in a tough situation where he feels he needs to choose between fractions, and has to decided to do the right or wrong thing. <b>Story # 5,6 & 7: "First Jumper -- Tris", "Careful, Tris" and "You Look Good, Tris"</b> This is just a few very short scenes that already took place in "Divergent", but their just in Four's perspective. I won't give any summary on these, because each one is only a few pages long. <b>My Thoughts:</b> I know, I know. I should have read this a long time ago. I finally did though, and it was nice to be able to get back into the Divergent world. Even for this brief amount of time. It was great to get inside Four's head a bit. He's a very interesting character. He's not always as tough as you might original think. He truly cares, has his morals, and has a hint of a soft side. Doesn't make him any less brave. Four and I have some similarities. I feel like if he were a real person, we would be good friends. I like how easy the books are too read and how well it flows. <b>Recommendation:</b> Read it, read it all!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this a little too much! You HAVE to get this book if you have read Divergent! I love how Veronica Roth explained how Tobias was feeling and why he fell in love with Tris. The only downside for me is that it was too short. I wanted more of the book that what Veronica had put! Other than that totally recommend this book! I loved it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good The idea of this novel was great because it really got into details that explain why Four was the way he was in the series. His character was built up even more, showing readers that he did not like to be controlled and wanted to make his own decisions. The last section was also pretty fun reading with Divergent at hand, so I got both his and Tris' perspective. However, the book was not particularly captivating; I mainly just read it because it was related to the series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting So, I decided to buy this book because my friends told me it was a good book. I quite enjoyed reading from Tobias' point of view but I do wish that there was more detail in each mini story, and some from when he was a little boy. I gave this four (he he) stars because overall it was an enjoyable book but I would've liked more detail and a few more stories.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clarity I loved the series and found them all exciting and I couldn't wait to read more. I really enjoyed seeing it from Tobias' perspective. It filled in the blanks nicely with his thoughts, actions and emotions. Great compliment to the series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from A little boring. If you love the Divergent series and would like to know a tad more of Tobias Eaton this book is for you. If you want to collect the uber gorgeous books of the series then this is a must add in your Divergent collection. If you are looking for the 4th book of Divergent then this is not the book you are looking for, the Divergent ended at Allegiant (3rd book). And this book is just like a prologue-slash-epilogue. If you are a little critical with what you read, like me, I guess I should have just bought a cheaper copy, a used book perhaps. This book is too short, a fast read that is. I finished the entire series in two weeks 1,2,3. Then when I was reading Four it took me like a month, because I think I was too bored with it and the scenes are just so repetitive, I expected it to be that way because the author would just want us to hear Four, about what was he thinking during the series. I believe that this novel could have been better if it told the story of Four AFTER the Allegiant. So as to give all the initiates out there (readers/fans) a gleam of hope of another Four's story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Book It was great to see things from the perspective of Tobias (4) since you never really knew what his thoughts were througout the series. It gave great closure to the series for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from amazing book When I bought this book I didn't know exactly what is was about but it was a divergent book so I grabbed it. The book is amazingly written and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys Veronica Roth's divergent series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Four <3 I read Divergent, Insurgent and Allegiant last year and adored the trilogy. Four had to have been one of my favourite characters, and I was very happy when I found out this book was being written! I didn't exactly enjoy having Four's POV in Allegiant because it was hard to differentiate it from Tris', but he was very well portrayed as a voice of his own in this book. I liked the way that it started with the ending of his aptitude test and the way it followed through into the four sections (or short stories) of the book, showing his initiation, job selection, his rivalry with Eric, etc. Four was a very complicated character, and actually feeling his emotions and seeing certain events from Divergent (in part four) from his POV was very interesting. We were able to investigate and better understand his parental relationship through this book and we really saw a lot more of Marlene and Zeke in this book, which was great, because I found them to be very interesting characters. Learning how he had felt about Tris throughout her whole initiation was great, because I had always pondered when he started to like her more and how their relationship was in his mind. I very much enjoyed this book and I definitely recommend that you read it! :)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Really Like It I really liked the book. It was great to find out what Four was doing the whole time. My only complaint would be that sometimes conversations in different parts and books that occurred at the same time didn't match up exactly. And that the order of the stories could have been more chronological.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE IT!! I bought this book at walmart, the other day (it was cheaper than on here.) I read it in about a day, and I loved it!!! Four's point of view was a little bit hard to get into because it was used to hearing Tris, but once I got through the first couple of pages, i was hooked!!! I liked it better than the actual Divergent trilogy! (SURPRISE!) I think Veronica did a fantastic job at letting us see a little deeper into what four went through before Tris was in the picture! I really want more from fours point of view... maybe insurgent and allegiant??!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I always wanted! I've only gotten through half of this book at the moment, but I can just say it's everything I could have wanted. You've gotten a taste of reading from Tobias' point of view in Allegiant, but to really hear about Tobias' story, from the Choosing Ceremony to meeting Tris, it's amazing. I've always wanted to know how Tobias was like before, his feelings about the faction system during that time, and just all those unanswered questions about his past. The only thing I didn't like about it is that it wasn't longer! I would've loved to read even more depth, I don't wanna finish this too quickly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this book Really glad I bought it. Veronica Roth did not disappoint, and it was really nice to see what Tobias' life was like before Tris was introduced, and what he was thinking when he was with her as well. Good book, nice cover. The only thing I didn't like was that there were no chapters within it. I mean, the little stars separated the sections but, I would have preferred chapters.

Editorial Reviews

“Divergent fans will thoroughly enjoy this extra bit of backstory, which is filled with names and places that became beloved in Roth’s bestselling trilogy. Roth’s storytelling retains the same mix of tension, uncertainty, and hope that made the original stories irresistible.”
