Detective Alex Cross is on his way to resign from the Washington, D.C., Police Force when his partner shows up at his door with a case he can't refuse. One of John Sampson's oldest friends, from their days together in Vietnam, has been arrested for murder. Worse yet, he is subject to the iron hand of the United States Army. The evidence against him is strong enough to send him to the gas chamber.

Sampson is certain his friend has been framed, and Alex's investigation turns up evidence overlooked-or concealed-by the military authorities. Drawing on their years of street training and an almost telepathic mutual trust, Cross and Sampson go deep behind military lines to confront the most terrifying-and deadly-killers they have ever encountered. Behind these three highly skilled killing machines there appears to be an even more threatening controller. Discovering the identity of this lethal genius will prove to be Cross's most terrifying challenge ever.

On his visits home, Alex must confront another, more harrowing mystery: what's the matter with Nana Mama? As he explores the possibility of a new relationship with a woman who offers him new hope, Alex must also confront the fact that his beloved grandmother is only human.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 4 Blind Mice Boy, can Patterson write! He's absolutely marvellous. I started reading very young, as the majority of kids in England do plus my reading introductory yrs. were in the '50's & T.V. was not a staple in most homes. Libraries were on nearly every street, so u walked to the library at least once a week. I instilled reading in my children at an early age, which they still prefer to do rather than watch T.V. (although we all prefer different gendre's ) but some in common. My grandchildren continue reading a lot also (which I am very proud of). It's Patterson that we all read & pass books around to each other. I hadn't read his earlier novels on Dr. A. Cross till this one. What can I say where does the man dream up this stuff & his descriptions of torture are amazing. Sometimes I have to put a book down as he & his co-author are so graphic & slow my heart rate as it seems to be beating quickly. Guess I'm buying more earlier books on Dr. A. Cross.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OMG!!!! This book is no where near better than any of the others. I was actually sort of disappointed. This book was boring. No adrenaline, no much romance, although there are a few good scenes (cough, cough). Anyway the ending was nothing compared to the others. There was no action no learning anything it was all just boring. I'd advise you to read another book in the James Patterson series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great book by a great writer The book reads as fast as a movie except better. Patersons style of writing and the plot as usual makes this another "can't put down till your finished " novel

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gripping with Suspense Detective Alex Cross and his partner John Sampson are relentless in their determination to uncover the identity of true killers of several solved gruesome murders that appeared to be open and shut cases but turn out to be anything but. Riddled in cover up, controversy and the grey wall of silence, these murders cases engulf Cross and Sampson as they persevere for answers to uncover the truth. Good Luck on putting this book down before it's finished!!
