Fractals

Hardcover

not yet rated|write a review
B. Mandelbrot has written for general scientific readers about the rich variety of the past and potential applications of the fractal concept, and writes the foreword to the present volume. The author is a physicist at the University of Oslo, and was led to fractals from his research interest in phase-transitions, in the aggregation of immunoglobulins and in the viscous fingering of fluid displacement in porous media. He has produced a book which, while showing evidence of the specifics of its origin, treats also general issues, and in an attractive way which readers of Mandelbrot's books are likely to find nicely complementary. Crisply printed, with good figures and seven pages of color plates. (NW) Annotation(c) 2003 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
