The #1 New York Times bestselling thriller about powerful family ties and the forbidden attraction between a judge and a Texas Ranger.

Crawford Hunt wants his daughter back. Following the death of his wife four years ago, Crawford, a Texas Ranger, fell into a downward spiral that left him relegated to deskwork and with his five-year-old daughter Georgia in the custody of her grandparents. But Crawford has cleaned up his act, met all the court imposed requirements, and now the fate of his family lies with Judge Holly Spencer.

Holly, ambitious and confident, temporarily occupies the bench of her recently deceased mentor. With an election upcoming, she must prove herself worthy of making her judgeship permanent. Every decision is high-stakes. Despite Crawford's obvious love for his child and his commitment to being an ideal parent, Holly is wary of his checkered past. Her opinion of him is radically changed when a masked gunman barges into the courtroom during the custody hearing. Crawford reacts instinctually, saving Holly from a bullet.

But his heroism soon takes on the taint of recklessness. The cloud over him grows even darker after he uncovers a horrifying truth about the courtroom gunman and realizes that the unknown person behind the shooting remains at large . . .and a threat.

Catching the real culprit becomes a personal fight for Crawford. But pursuing the killer in his customary diehard fashion will jeopardize his chances of gaining custody of his daughter, and further compromise Judge Holly Spencer, who needs protection not only from an assassin, but from Crawford himself and the forbidden attraction between them.

FRICTION will keep you on the edge of your seat with breathtaking plot twists and the unforgettable characters that make Sandra Brown one of the world's best-loved authors. It is an extraordinary novel about the powerful ties that bind us to the ones we love and the secrets we keep to protect them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this writer! Another wonderful, perfect book by Sandra Brown. I don't know how she does it but this being the second book I've read by her and also being perfect in my eyes with story structure, plot, suspense, characters, and everything included in a great and well-written story, there is no doubt that Sandra Brown is an artist when it comes to writing. I truly admire her skill and her stories!! There was a wide range of characters and a bunch of different plots and subplots (and different crazy suspenseful plot twists!). Some of the characters made me very angry which I think was to be expected. And of course others I rooted for wholeheartedly. Crawford reminds me of one of those misunderstood, scruffy, intimidating kind of guys who really has the warmest heart for those he genuinely cares for like his daughter. Their relationship was beautiful and made my heart all warm and fuzzy reading interactions between Georgia and Crawford. Holly was also actually I think one of my favourite female characters. I like her honesty and her drive and precision to do what's right. I felt she was a pretty strong character. This story also had the perfect dash of hot romance and many leaves-you-wanting-more moments. Coinciding with the suspense and main plots it all tied in very well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Friction An interesting read dealing with tragedy and suspense. The main character appears to be fully in control of his life until his past becomes entwined with the present. He is dealing with the tragic loss of his wife and the battle to gain custody of his child. The judge in the case may not be sympathetic to his case but events unfold that creates a bond between them. The twists and turns throughout the book leaves the reader anxious to complete the story and discover the outcome of the mysterious plot. Definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exciting story! I liked this book quite a bit. As a long time fan of Sandra Brown, I am always excited anytime a new book is released. I can't think of another writer of romantic suspense that can even compare to Sandra Brown. This book really grabbed a hold of me from the very beginning and I could not wait to see how everything would come together in the end. This wasn't my favorite Sandra Brown novel but it is a very entertaining and solid story. Crawford Hunt is in court in an attempt to regain custody of his daughter when the unthinkable happens...a gunman enters the courtroom and opens fire. Crawford immediately jumps into action protecting the judge and chasing the suspect. He soon finds himself in the middle of an investigation where every one of his actions is met with suspicion and criticism. Holly is the judge that was hearing Crawford's case when the gunman entered the courtroom. She is grateful to Crawford for protecting her during the ordeal. Holly is in middle of a campaign in the hopes of holding onto her position as judge. She knows that she should stay away from Crawford but keeps finding herself being pulled to him and the search for the gunman. As I have come to expect in a Sandra Brown novel, this book was fast paced with a lot of action. The book opens with a bang and the excitement only increased from there. I thought the second half of the book was very strong and the ending was wonderfully executed. The characters in this book were colorful and interesting, with a couple of individuals that meant to be hated. I didn't really feel the chemistry between Crawford and Holly at first but by the end of the story I was won over. I really had some trouble understanding why everyone in this story had so many issues with Crawford's actions. Yes, he chased the gunman to the roof of the building. What was he supposed to do? Let him get away? It seemed like he couldn't do anything right. If he hadn't chased the gunman, he would have been criticized for that decision. I just don't like the parts of the book that focused on tearing his actions apart. I did like Holly and Crawford together by the end of the book but this was a couple that I had some trouble with at the beginning. Holly was very focused on maintaining her ethical code so I find it a bit of a jump that she would get involved with Crawford in the first place. I really didn't feel that much chemistry between the pair in the beginning of the story either. I would highly recommend this book to fans of romantic suspense. Sandra Brown is an author that is not to be missed and I cannot wait to read more of her work. I received an advance reader edition of this book from Grand Central Publishing via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absorbing and gripping suspense! If you love absorbing, edge of your seat, page-turning thrillers, the kind that you find very difficult to put down, then you really can't go wrong with anything written by Sandra Brown. Rugged Texas Ranger Crawford Hunt is in the midst of a custody fight for his little girl and with a well-deserved reputation for recklessness, he can't afford to step out of line, but when an armed gunman engages in a shooting spree during the custody hearing, Crawford reacts instinctively, protecting the presiding judge from taking a bullet and then chasing after the shooter. Judge Holly Spencer knows that she owes her life to the fast acting Ranger and as survivors of that experience, a bond forms between them. When that bond grows into a forbidden attraction, she knows that her impartiality has been compromised and must recuse herself from the case. Judge Spencer is a temporary appointee to her position and with the election coming up, she is in a high-stakes fight to prove that she is worthy of the position and her attraction to Crawford is sure to affect her ambitions. Crawford is a man with a predilection for bending the rules to achieve results but he must curtail his cowboy tendencies in order to protect the judge not only from the assassin, but also from himself. The resultant discovery that the wrong man was apprehended and the real gunman is still unaccounted for means that Crawford must join in the search for the assassin, even if this could jeopardize his chances of gaining custody of his daughter. What everyone does not know is that the shootout in the courtroom is the opening salvo in an intricate plot of revenge and the target is not Judge Spencer as assumed, but Crawford Hunt and things will only get worse. FRICTION was an absolutely gripping read, filled with twists, conspiracies, secrets, danger and passion; a story about family and bonds of love and how far the boundaries can be pushed to protect loved ones.
