Robert Munsch was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He moved to Guelph, Ontario, in 1975. Michael Martchenko was born in Carcassone, France. He moved to Toronto, Ontario, in 1950. Rated 5 out of 5 by from From Far Away Attention teachers! This book is a great one for a language or social studies lesson for a variety of grade levels. Saoussan, a young girl from Beirut, Lebanon writes about her transition to the "Canadian" way of life and its effects on herself and her family. The story is a fantastic journey of migration, growth and retention of heritage. It is a meaningful piece of artwork that provides numerous opportunities for discussion with a variety of audiences; the importance of seeing life through the eyes of each child. At the end of the book the importance of tradition and heritage are stressed when Saoussan changes her name to Susan, and her mother changes it back. This incident in the story can lead to many discussions with children about the importance of cultural links to the past. As teachers we can stress that it is important to remember where you came from because it forms who you will become in the future.
