Rated 5 out of 5 by from Prequel I started reading this a few years ago without reading the main series, and to my surprise, I had no trouble understanding the story. In my opinion, this is better than the main story (in both characters and the romance) and it was really enjoyable for me to read. Although the ending was perdictable, you still feel for the characters when it just hits.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Legend had it coming I was thrilled to hear Yuu Watase was going to take up the Fushigi Yugi torch once more and even more delighted when her brilliant artwork began appearing in shops promoting this dazzling new series. Her story telling and art has improved beyond the masterpiece it already was. This tale of the first priestess is another tale of a young girl seeking refuge from her own life, but this time things are different. The world hasn't yet seen a priestess. Many are skeptical, more are affraid and Takiko finds herself fighting against the people she's trying to save.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the first! After the wildly popular Fushigi Yuugi, we now have a prequel of an even more impressive calibre! The Genbu Kaiden is the prequel to the first Fushigi Yuugi, which had told the story of two high school girls and their seven handsome warriors. In the Genbu Kaiden, readers have the opportunity to read about the tragic Takiko and the difficult lives of her seven warriors. After ten years since creating Fushigi Yuugi, it' is easy to see how Watase's artwork has developed, matured and improved, producing beautiful and detailed images. Most of the characters are wonderfully developed and their interactions are entertaining as well as believable. Unfortunately the handsome male protagonist suffers from Typical Hero Syndrome. However, any minor faults in character development are made up for with a dramatic and engaging plotline and darker theme than the first Fushigi Yuugi. Younger fans of the first Fushigi Yuugi may want to be aware of slightly more nudity, and a more graphic violence and death than was present in most of Watase's other works. More mature fans of Watase's stories will enjoy this prequel, and those who didn't enjoy the sugary-ness of Fushigi Yuugi will find this new take on an old story refreshing.
