Excerpt from General Register of Lake Forest College, 1857-1914

T is primarily through the suggestion and the gener osity of a member of the Board of Trustees, who has defrayed a large proportion of its cost, that we are able to offer this volume to the Lake Forest family and friends. The book represents a condensed summary of information now permanently on file in the College office. The collection of the data has been a long and difficult task, and the records can hardly ever be made complete, but the task of gath ering them would have been much more difficult a few years later. Hence the book is timely, and it is hoped that it may have historic value, containing as it does the names of all who have been enrolled in the College catalogues as officers or stu dents; that it may serve as the basis for future compilations; and especially may so stimulate the interest of its readers that they may help us at once in the correction of errors and the supplying of new information where it is obviously lacking.

The book represents the result of persistent labor for more than a year. The chief difficulty, aside from our inability to get any trace at all of perhaps fifty individuals, has been the failure to get any response to our inquiries in the case of many whose addresses were known with tolerable certainty. Some of these persons have, however, promptly subscribed for the book. We trust the volume will prove to them the value of accurate and complete records in every case as well as the impersonal use We make of them.

In the class lists it will be noticed that the class presidents and secretaries are designated in caps for the classes since 1900. It has been impossible to get trustworthy information about the class officers before that date. We should be'glad to know the names of these officers, if so recognized, for the earlier classes, and we urge that in each class at least a secre tary be named or appointed. The ideal official relation between a college and its alumni is maintained through the class secre taries: we hope that in time each secretary will feel himself responsible for the accuracy of his own class roll.
