For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one boxed set. An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R. R. Martin—dubbed “the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers. Now here is the entire monumental cycle:
“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times
Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.
“Long live George Martin . . . a literary dervish, enthralled by complicated characters and vivid language, and bursting with the wild vision of the very best tale tellers.”—The New York Times

Customer Reviews of George R. R. Martin's A Game Of Thrones 5-book Boxed Set (song Of Ice And Fire Series): A Game Of Thrones, A Clash Of Kings, A Storm Of Swords, A Feas

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the show If you're a fan of the show, you must read these book to expand on the mythology and lore of the basic story. Winds of Winter, where are you???

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love I love the Game of Thrones! This is the perfect set.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome series Wonderful series - super affordable for the amount of storytelling that is done in these five books. I love the detail and depth Martin puts into the characters, and I love the style it's written it. You would expect it to feel fragmented as you switch between characters, but you really don't. It's one of the only series that manages to encompass an entire world, and its twenty-some main characters without compromising the story. I will admit that I did not enjoy A Feast for Crows as much as the first three - I wasn't that interested in the Dornish plotline introduced in Book 4. All in all, still a wonderful journey. Recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good! I bought the series and have so far read just the first book. It took me a while, as they are all very long books, but they are so captivating it was hard to put it down!! GRRM's writing is one of the best I've ever experienced. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for first 5 books This is hands-down the best set to purchase if you want to get the first 5 books in the GoT series. But I suggest you make sure GRRM's writing style is to your taste first - he can be tough to get through with so much detail and slow-moving, character-led chapters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This series is great I blew through the first 3 books but i'm struggling a little to get through the 4th. I think because I don't love a few of the narratives when I get to those chapters I loose interest. But overall I love the books and I do enjoy reading them as well as watching the show because they give a lot more detail, which is nice to have #PlumReview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great series! I started buying into this series years ago, and I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions i've made. These books are very detailed and can often seem complicated but it takes you through a series of adventures! I can honestly say it is one of the few books that have seemed to have made a great impact on television as well - as for the most part, it is pleasing to see the works of George R. R. Martin come to life - although nothing is as great as the literature itself.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Series I bought these as the TV show was coming out (because you have to read the book first!) and will admit I found them hard to read - so many characters and cities with strange names that all started to sound the same. I ended up watching the first season and then going back to the books, which made the reading much easier as I could put faces to names and really get into the different story lines. I highly recommend this exciting, engaging series #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read I did enjoy the books, some parts - in my opinion - were slow and maybe over detailed (knowing what a character ate didn't seem too important to me) I would still recommend a friend read these books #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EPIC Amazing, very stimulating read. I love the moral complexity and while some may say it is long, there's just more to enjoy! The box this particular edition came in was a little flimsy and doesn't hold well, but the writing is brilliant and the books themselves seem fine.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One big book I wish they split this up into 5, rather than 1 massive book. But besides that GoT is such a good series, well worth the money.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I was enjoying the book until... I bought this set about a year ago and I've only had a chance to start reading the first book this week. I was enjoying the book until I got towards the end of the book and the pages were scrambled and some were missing. I got to page 672 and then it went back to page 609-624, then it's jumps to 689 to 674 then it goes back to 641 to 656 and then jumps to 721 and continues with the novel as if nothing happens. I was hoping that the pages that were missing would show up somewhere but they don't . My friend also ordered this set and it was the same issue with her copy. We have yet to look at the other books to see if the same issue arises. Its really disappointing that I will not get to properly finish the book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Confusing I bought this bundle and just recently bought a physical copy of a dance with dragons. Why are the chapters different from each other? One chapter will have a characters name on it in the Ebook, and it won't be in the physical book. An example without spoilers Having Eddard Stark in the Ebook, but not having him pop up in the physical book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic Excellence This story starts coming at you quick, and just keeps coming. I could spend days writing about the story. But apparently there is a 1500 character limit. I am a more recent convert to GoT, becoming aware mostly from watching the excellent HBO series of the same name. At long last, I finally finished reading the first five books. Many feel Frank Herbert Dune saga is so great in part for the political intrigue, plotting, betrayal, and fantasic story building. For me this is like that sorta kinda, but oh so much better. A few words about the books: Book 1... builds characters, and does a great job showing you what the series will stand on. The betrayal, the shock, everything is there in A Game of Thrones. I find most interesting how in this first book how quite plausible events, though seemingly small perhaps, could translate into so many also plausible far reaching consequences. Most of the book is more just fantasy medieval rather than high fantasy. Book 3 ... probably the best book in the series. I was literally exhausted from reading all the events in the final 30 chapters. So much happens in this book. At the same time, it may have been too much. This could easily have been 2 books as is. Books 4 and 5: onve you realize fully that these two books start out at the same timeline. Book 5 eventually joins to the end of book 4 timeline wise, and then continues on. These 2 books are interesting, but less so than book 3. Where are the next 2 books????

Rated 1 out of 5 by from When he gets bored, he just kills everyone The author has created to many characters and to many story lines. He has created some great characters but gets bored with them then either kills them off or stops writing about them for chapters or books. Doesn't know where to go with a story line so he just drops it. Seems to write himself into a box , doesn't know where he is going so he just kills everyone one, or just drops it and creates a new character and story line. Characters or story lines you want to care about are left hanging. Thank god he has other writers helping him on the TV series. Might have been better have had several books within his world instead. Kept hoping it would get better, didn't. Character and storyline I really loved and wanted resolved got cheap ending (Kill them off) or just disappeared (the Others) Painful read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing After being pestered by multiple people to read this series, I'd have to say I'm more obsessed with it than they are! George R. R. Martin's writing is so well done, and so detailed that I find myself disappearing into the land of Westeros for hours. Just spectacular!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I only wish the books were separated into individuals, even with the bundle deal. It was so discouraging to read some 100 pages or so and only have read 1-2% of the entire thing. Love the series though, and can't wait for the 6th book!
Date published: 2014-08-02
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Series I'm a big follower of the show. I hadn't even touched the books up until now (4 seasons deep into the show). I was sick of waiting 10 months for 10 episodes, so I bought the books. I'm reading all the books from the beginning in preparation for next season. The books are awesome. Physically they are well bound and the covers look great. The print is (your standard?) 12pt which makes for easy reading. The box set is a nice added touch, providing continuity in their physical appearance. It's nice to have them look like an actual set instead of a bunch of throw-togethers. Content-wise, well we all know it's a great story. George R.R. Martin writes in a way that really immerses you into the GoT world and captures all the emotion and imagery you'd expect from a world such as this. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Trade Paperback size I had bought this series in the smaller mass market size and it was just horrible to read. Eventually the size of the print was taking away from the enjoyment of the books so I exchanged it for the trade paperback and I'm so glad I did. They cost more but are so worth it. The books are very good quality and of course the stories themselves are fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully presented... I was very pleased to see this offering at a very competitive price point. I decided to read this series before season four of the HBO series begins... the books are well made and are very sturdy for paperback... no wear and tear showing at the half way point...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I love this genre of book!  This series is very well written, without too much embellishment.  The characters are deep and rich; they are neither black nor white rather they are more like real people with attributes and flaws.  Each book is engaging, like being a fly on the wall.  A favourite series along with Tolkein and Shakespeare.

Editorial Reviews

Praise for George R. R. Martin and A Song of Ice and Fire   “The only fantasy series I’d put on a level with J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings . . . It’s a fantasy series for hip, smart people, even those who don’t read fantasy.”—Chicago Tribune   “Martin amply fulfills the first volume’s promise and continues what seems destined to be one of the best fantasy series ever written.”—The Denver Post, on A Clash of Kings   “Martin has produced—is producing, since the series isn’t over—the great fantasy epic of our era. It’s an epic for a more profane, more jaded, more ambivalent age than the one Tolkien lived in.”—Lev Grossman, Time   “Addictive . . . George R. R. Martin has created the unlikely genre of the realpolitik fantasy novel.”—Rolling Stone, on A Feast for Crows   “Epic fantasy as it should be written: passionate, compelling, convincingly detailed and thoroughly imagined.”—The Washington Post, on A Dance with Dragons   “I always expect the best from George R. R. Martin, and he always delivers.”—Robert Jordan
