“One of the best series in the history of fantasy.”—Los Angeles Times

Winter is coming. Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing. There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name. There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow. Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season.
Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances. Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind. All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms.
Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of My Favorites! I bought this box set a couple of years ago and fell in love. I have re-read it twice and I am still not sick of it. I watched the TV series before I read the books and the books give so much more background information and additional characters than the TV show provides. Highly Recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyable! This series is enjoyable, however, I really do like the television show better. Perhaps because it moves quicker. It's still worth the read though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from great pack, great price This is really cheap for all of these books! A good read but, very gory and at times hard to read. Great representation of the story.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A True Work of Art! This is the best series I have ever read! When I heard about GOT the show was already aired and it was as though I was hearing about it everywhere! When I took the plunge and began reading the series I instantly understood why. I am so glad I read all the published books before I began indulging in the show because while the show is fantastic the books are out of this world! They are so enrapturing that many other hobbies were neglected during my read however it was certainly worth it! I can not wait to re read them all once again! Until the next book is published I will continue to stalk George RR Martins website and social media to ensure I do not miss an announcement on when we can expect the last part of the series. No negativity from me on that wait as I know it will be well worth it! Creation as brilliant as this certainly takes time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It Really Is As Good As Everyone Says It Is! I love all the characters in this series. What I love most are the characters - every character is so well written and believable and I love every one of them. In my opinion, this is an incredibly rare trait, especially in fantasy and science fiction. In my opinion, female characters in these genres are almost always annoying. The writer would describe them as being smart and independent but the smartest thing they'll ever do is attract the right men to help them. The women in GoT, however, are entirely different.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent HBO is outdoing itself bringing Westeros to life. An exceptional tale set in a fictional land reminiscent of medieval Europe. The quest for or to keep power knows no limits.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Detailed More detailed and intricate than the book series. There are more characters in the book than on the actual show! Hard to put down, some characters are easier to root for, and many characters are complex. Good read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you're going to read these, get the set. You won't be able to put them down, so might as well get all 5 of them at once so you don't have to wait to know what happens next! Fantastic series, although it is a bit stretched out in the 2 most recent ones...can't wait to see Book 6 come out to (hopefully) wrap things up!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 6 stars! I held off reading any of the Game of Thrones books or watching any of the movies for a long time, thinking it wouldn't live up to the hype. Man, was I wrong! The characters are so well done, you sympathize and empathize and love and hate them all, and your feelings toward them change over time as they change. I have never enjoyed fantasy books, but these books were just too good to put down. I binge-read all 5 as fast as I could, and now I'm one of the helpless millions waiting for the series to be completed. Just plain awesome!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Series This series is great. Not for the faint of heart as it has quite a lot of violence. I bought this set first as it was cheaper. Ended up giving it all away so I could get the pretty leather bound set. It's more than worth the price and looks great on the shelf

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Series I have read the series once already, and am currently reading it for a second time. It is so well written and so many details I missed the first time are just making it as interesting if not more this time through then the first.

Date published: 2017-08-09
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lackluster Maybe I've read too much of this genre, but feels like more of the same with an element of cheesy daytime soap opera. Overly complicated, way too many characters with very intricate back stories and I don't know if it would be so enjoyable if the TV show didn't exist to help clear up and simplify things. I've abandoned the series before the first book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If You're Thinking of Starting this Series, DO IT! This is by far the best book series I have ever read. Each character has their own unique storyline, past, and personality that stands out. There are a lot of characters and a lot of places to keep track of so you have to pay attention but it is well worth the read, I found myself staying up late and waking up early just to find out what my favourite characters were up to, and I ended up finishing the first five books within a few weeks, now I am anxiously awaiting The Winds of Winter (Book 6). I fell in love with Westeros and all of the families within it right away, as I'm sure you will as well. If you already watch the HBO tv series, I would still recommend reading the books as the storylines are not all the same and you get a better sense of the characters, as well as their past.

Date published: 2017-05-30
Rated 5 out of 5 by from better than the show very good books! much better than the show (although it is pretty epic). the paperback boxset comes at a very reasonable cost for five books. I usually buy hardcover, but this was definitely worth the cost.
Date published: 2017-05-24
Rated 4 out of 5 by from What a great series Each book is better than the last. The way in which the chapters are laid out to the reader is to be commended and is definitely something different than the traditional novel. The characters are complex and often hard to feel empathetic or complete disgust for. The time and place where the story takes place, allows the reader to evaluate what it means to survive during trying times of war, famine, gender violence, slavery, and a potential apocalypse. What seems to make sense from an outsider perspective is often challenges by the narrative presented by each character, and the types of choices they are forced to make. This is not a story where the characters are battling good versus evil, but rather the types of choices in need of being made in consideration to both possibilities.

Date published: 2017-05-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from great series, but starts to really drag near book 4 despite the very long wait, the newest book doesn't push the story forward too far. i'd recommend this collection for any fan of the show to get started with. however it is a harder pill to swallow now that the show is so far ahead and has shown many future plot points that are yet to even be introduced in the books.

Date published: 2017-04-21
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing series! I was hooked on this series since reading the first chapter in book 1. The entire series is a work of art, from start to finish. It has a bit of everything - romance, action, mystery/suspense and even action. Character development is fantastic, and overall I feel the series is a bit more realistic, in that the characters seem more human, when compared to other series. Well-done series I would recommend to anyone who has a love for fantasy.

Date published: 2017-04-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible! Absolutely love this series. An absolutely amazing look at the depths people will go to gain power and keep it. I have seen reviews comparing this series to Lord of the Rings and Martin to Tolkien but I have to disagree. If you are looking for something similar to Tolkien, this is not the series for you. A lot more politics and adult themes and situations.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic but heavy This series is ENORMOUS - and its really quite heavy. Its a series you cannot just randomly pick up and read lightly. It requires focus and ability to keep minutiae straight as everything is so important. I read one and then tae a break with a lighter read and then return.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the all-time great reads in fantasy Whether or not you've seen the HBO series, ASoIaF will blow you away. Despite a few downturns in pacing here and there within the rather long novels. Now let's just hope GRRM actually finishes it, eh?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love the content, but Mass Market is awful I bought this set in June when it was only $23.30 and it was an amazing deal. I love GOT, I love the books and how much less cartoonish the characters are in Martin's universe than they are on HBO. Because you only get to see the narrative from select perspectives, you don't spend as much time with the truly awful characters, which makes them more humanizing. Cersei, Joffrey, the Boltons, they're less prevalent and more nuanced in the books. My only gripe is with the format. These books are loooong and reading them in Mass Market is really burdensome. I have little hands so it hurts to hold one book open as it's terribly thick. Other than that, no complaints. $23 for 5 books is a great steal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing value About 6000 pages of pure awesomeness, for only 53 dollars, you cant go wrong. Considering the new "illustrated edition" of book 1 in this series goes for 50 dollars by itself, this is an amazing bargain. Do not hesitate to purchase this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING SERIES!!!!! I read all of the books in six months. I have basically all of the Game of Thrones books that go with the series and I am impatiently waiting for the next book. I would recommend this series to anyone that is a big reader. I was a proud human being when I met a young girl reading this challenging series. If you are a fantasy lover I 100/100 recommend this series. I have nothing but high praise for this series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome series Wonderful series - super affordable for the amount of storytelling that is done in these five books. I love the detail and depth Martin puts into the characters, and I love the style it's written it. You would expect it to feel fragmented as you switch between characters, but you really don't. It's one of the only series that manages to encompass an entire world, and its twenty-some main characters without compromising the story. I will admit that I did not enjoy A Feast for Crows as much as the first three - I wasn't that interested in the Dornish plotline introduced in Book 4. All in all, still a wonderful journey. Recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good! I bought the series and have so far read just the first book. It took me a while, as they are all very long books, but they are so captivating it was hard to put it down!! GRRM's writing is one of the best I've ever experienced. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best value for first 5 books This is hands-down the best set to purchase if you want to get the first 5 books in the GoT series. But I suggest you make sure GRRM's writing style is to your taste first - he can be tough to get through with so much detail and slow-moving, character-led chapters.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This series is great I blew through the first 3 books but i'm struggling a little to get through the 4th. I think because I don't love a few of the narratives when I get to those chapters I loose interest. But overall I love the books and I do enjoy reading them as well as watching the show because they give a lot more detail, which is nice to have #PlumReview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great series! I started buying into this series years ago, and I can honestly say it has been one of the best decisions i've made. These books are very detailed and can often seem complicated but it takes you through a series of adventures! I can honestly say it is one of the few books that have seemed to have made a great impact on television as well - as for the most part, it is pleasing to see the works of George R. R. Martin come to life - although nothing is as great as the literature itself.
Date published: 2016-11-29
Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Series I bought these as the TV show was coming out (because you have to read the book first!) and will admit I found them hard to read - so many characters and cities with strange names that all started to sound the same. I ended up watching the first season and then going back to the books, which made the reading much easier as I could put faces to names and really get into the different story lines. I highly recommend this exciting, engaging series #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read I did enjoy the books, some parts - in my opinion - were slow and maybe over detailed (knowing what a character ate didn't seem too important to me) I would still recommend a friend read these books #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EPIC Amazing, very stimulating read. I love the moral complexity and while some may say it is long, there's just more to enjoy! The box this particular edition came in was a little flimsy and doesn't hold well, but the writing is brilliant and the books themselves seem fine.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I was enjoying the book until... I bought this set about a year ago and I've only had a chance to start reading the first book this week. I was enjoying the book until I got towards the end of the book and the pages were scrambled and some were missing. I got to page 672 and then it went back to page 609-624, then it's jumps to 689 to 674 then it goes back to 641 to 656 and then jumps to 721 and continues with the novel as if nothing happens. I was hoping that the pages that were missing would show up somewhere but they don't . My friend also ordered this set and it was the same issue with her copy. We have yet to look at the other books to see if the same issue arises. Its really disappointing that I will not get to properly finish the book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Confusing I bought this bundle and just recently bought a physical copy of a dance with dragons. Why are the chapters different from each other? One chapter will have a characters name on it in the Ebook, and it won't be in the physical book. An example without spoilers Having Eddard Stark in the Ebook, but not having him pop up in the physical book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Epic Excellence This story starts coming at you quick, and just keeps coming. I could spend days writing about the story. But apparently there is a 1500 character limit. I am a more recent convert to GoT, becoming aware mostly from watching the excellent HBO series of the same name. At long last, I finally finished reading the first five books. Many feel Frank Herbert Dune saga is so great in part for the political intrigue, plotting, betrayal, and fantasic story building. For me this is like that sorta kinda, but oh so much better. A few words about the books: Book 1... builds characters, and does a great job showing you what the series will stand on. The betrayal, the shock, everything is there in A Game of Thrones. I find most interesting how in this first book how quite plausible events, though seemingly small perhaps, could translate into so many also plausible far reaching consequences. Most of the book is more just fantasy medieval rather than high fantasy. Book 3 ... probably the best book in the series. I was literally exhausted from reading all the events in the final 30 chapters. So much happens in this book. At the same time, it may have been too much. This could easily have been 2 books as is. Books 4 and 5: onve you realize fully that these two books start out at the same timeline. Book 5 eventually joins to the end of book 4 timeline wise, and then continues on. These 2 books are interesting, but less so than book 3. Where are the next 2 books????

Rated 1 out of 5 by from When he gets bored, he just kills everyone The author has created to many characters and to many story lines. He has created some great characters but gets bored with them then either kills them off or stops writing about them for chapters or books. Doesn't know where to go with a story line so he just drops it. Seems to write himself into a box , doesn't know where he is going so he just kills everyone one, or just drops it and creates a new character and story line. Characters or story lines you want to care about are left hanging. Thank god he has other writers helping him on the TV series. Might have been better have had several books within his world instead. Kept hoping it would get better, didn't. Character and storyline I really loved and wanted resolved got cheap ending (Kill them off) or just disappeared (the Others) Painful read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing After being pestered by multiple people to read this series, I'd have to say I'm more obsessed with it than they are! George R. R. Martin's writing is so well done, and so detailed that I find myself disappearing into the land of Westeros for hours. Just spectacular!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love my GOT series I was lucky enough to buy this set at the lowest price. Just $29.97, even cheaper than Amazon! The delivery was also so fast and now I'm enjoying reading this book on subway or bus as the size is perfect for carrying it around. Thank you Indigo! :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I only wish the books were separated into individuals, even with the bundle deal. It was so discouraging to read some 100 pages or so and only have read 1-2% of the entire thing. Love the series though, and can't wait for the 6th book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Series I'm a big follower of the show. I hadn't even touched the books up until now (4 seasons deep into the show). I was sick of waiting 10 months for 10 episodes, so I bought the books. I'm reading all the books from the beginning in preparation for next season. The books are awesome. Physically they are well bound and the covers look great. The print is (your standard?) 12pt which makes for easy reading. The box set is a nice added touch, providing continuity in their physical appearance. It's nice to have them look like an actual set instead of a bunch of throw-togethers. Content-wise, well we all know it's a great story. George R.R. Martin writes in a way that really immerses you into the GoT world and captures all the emotion and imagery you'd expect from a world such as this. Highly recommended!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Game of Thrones Great character development with graphically depicted landscapes. Wordy at times and repetitive with characters sentiments. Better than the TV show by leaps and bounds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love the Trade Paperback size I had bought this series in the smaller mass market size and it was just horrible to read. Eventually the size of the print was taking away from the enjoyment of the books so I exchanged it for the trade paperback and I'm so glad I did. They cost more but are so worth it. The books are very good quality and of course the stories themselves are fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautifully presented... I was very pleased to see this offering at a very competitive price point. I decided to read this series before season four of the HBO series begins... the books are well made and are very sturdy for paperback... no wear and tear showing at the half way point...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I love this genre of book!  This series is very well written, without too much embellishment.  The characters are deep and rich; they are neither black nor white rather they are more like real people with attributes and flaws.  Each book is engaging, like being a fly on the wall.  A favourite series along with Tolkein and Shakespeare.
