NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Kim Gordon, founding member of Sonic Youth, fashion icon, and role model for a generation of women, now tells her story—a memoir of life as an artist, of music, marriage, motherhood, independence, and as one of the first women of rock and roll, written with the lyricism and haunting beauty of Patti Smith's Just Kids.

Often described as aloof, Kim Gordon opens up as never before in Girl in a Band. Telling the story of her family, growing up in California in the '60s and '70s, her life in visual art, her move to New York City, the men in her life, her marriage, her relationship with her daughter, her music, and her band, Girl in a Band is a rich and beautifully written memoir.

Gordon takes us back to the lost New York of the 1980s and '90s that gave rise to Sonic Youth, and the Alternative revolution in popular music. The band helped build a vocabulary of music—paving the way for Nirvana, Hole, Smashing Pumpkins and many other acts. But at its core, Girl in a Band examines the route from girl to woman in uncharted territory, music, art career, what partnership means—and what happens when that identity dissolves.

Evocative and edgy, filled with the sights and sounds of a changing world and a transformative life, Girl in a Band is the fascinating chronicle of a remarkable journey and an extraordinary artist.

Kim Gordon is an artist, musician, producer, fashion designer, writer and actress. She is a founding member of the experimental post-punk band Sonic Youth. Following the breakup of Sonic Youth, Gordon formed the group Body/Head. A collection of her early critical art writing entitledIs It My Body?was released by Sternberg Press in Janua...

Rated 2 out of 5 by from So much promising material to work with... I remember anytime SY was interviewed, whether it was on TV or print, there would be very little input from Kim, who was usually sitting silently next to Thurston, wearing big, dark sunglasses. After decades as an artist in a variety of mediums, I was really looking forward to this book, thinking now she would have a lot to say... nope. Considering how groundbreaking the band was as far as composition and instrumentation, as well as maintaining success for 30 years, being a major influence on dozens of other bands, all while balancing being a full-time touring musician, producing other people's albums, her own work as a painter and photographer, her marriage to Thurstson, their own collaborations separate from Sonic Youth, raising their child AND starting a clothing line, there is SO MUCH here... but the book is not interesting. I think it would have been better had it been written by someone else. Too much of the book is taken up with unresolved (and understandable) resentment and pain of Thurston's affair and their subsequent divorce. Also, I found her choice of title strange, given the while she didn't talk a lot, she tended to particularly eschew the "As a woman in a band/man's world/Being the only woman in the band..." type of questions and not wanting to focus on the fact that she was a female musician, as opposed to simply a musician.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Wasted Youth I thought this was going to be an awesome punk memoir. It was not. For someone who doesn't want to be known as the girl in a band of guys, its interesting that she titled the book Girl In A Band. After reading this memoir, I still don't really know who Kim Gordon is. I was hoping for more. Skip this one.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exceptional Not your typical rock memoir. It's not cliched but great reading for anyone interested in the minutia of the world of music and the genesis of a rock star. Highly recommended! It's a quick read too. Get it for your self, or any person in your life, who loves music whether or not they are fans of Sonic Youth.
