This is Punpun Onodera’s coming-of-age story. His parents’ marriage is falling apart. His dad goes to jail, and his mom goes to the hospital. He has to live with his loser uncle. He has a crush on a girl who lives in a weird cult. Punpun tries talking with God about his problems, but God is a jerk. Punpun keeps hoping things will get better, but they really, really don’t.

Like most kids his age, Punpun is in high school.

In fact, he has made it into the best high school in town.

He is such a good student.

He studies so he doesn’t have to think about his life.

Maybe a meteor will crash into Earth and destroy everything.

A guy can wish, Punpun…

Rated 3 out of 5 by from The Story Got TOO Dramatic (Spoiler warning so don't read ahead if you don't want anything ruined for you) I was really loving the second volume so when the third came out I was prepared for more of an emotional ride...I kind of got my wish though it was overkill. So it's revealed why Yuichi hadn't returned home: he actually cheated on Midori and he even told her about it and she was fine with it? Then she proceeded to take advantage of his naive nephew and we have a real mess on our hands. I admit, I was shocked and it kind of gripped me to keep reading onwards out of curiosity because that event most definitely is something that would haunt anybody like our protagonist Punpun. However, by the time I found myself at the end I was left feeling mixed. The story introduced drama with Punpun's mother who is hospitalized due to health reasons and for the sake of extra drama she finds herself suddenly crushing on an underage boy that is Punpun's age who also was his childhood friend too. Not only that but it's a one-sided love since he has a girlfriend. I found that part really unnecessary and it kind of killed the spell I was under if the earlier bit with Yuichi's girlfriend didn't already. It was getting ridiculous at the rate that everybody was getting their loves/crushes stolen. Later in the story too Punpun messes up his first date and for some reason he starts to dramatically jack off while it's raining in a public park...earlier his mother told him not to come home so he decided to whip out his junk and walk around town like that. He should count himself lucky nobody saw him or he would've been arrested for indecent exposure. Major spoilers: Punpun's mom ends up succumbing to cancer. It is tragic to think about when it happens, that on his mom's deathbed Punpun is unable love her because by that point she had neglected him too much. In plenty of media the mother is seen as a lovable figure that can't do any wrong and is usually loved and his mom was shown in a complex light which was welcomed. I'd say I really felt something but I couldn't when I took into account everything that happened before that killed any sense of realism. I'll keep reading on and hope it gets better. The art was still nice but the storytelling distracted from it quite abit. Viz continues to release this with the usual 2 in 1 volume with french flaps. Punpun's mom is on the back flap which is fitting. If you've read this far you've officially downed 6 volumes.
