The wickedly funny first book in the #1 New York Times bestselling series that inspired the hit CW show starring Blake Lively.

Welcome to New York City's Upper East Side, where my friends and I live, go to school, play, and sleep--sometimes with each other.

S is back from boarding school, and if we aren't careful, she's going to win over our teachers, wear that dress we couldn't fit into, steal our boyfriends' hearts, and basically ruin our lives in a major way. I'll be watching closely...

You know you love me.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good A good start to the series, although it was kind of all over the place.
Date published: 2017-04-18
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Entertaining This is in no way a good piece of literature - it doesn't even come close. But there is something highly addictive about this book and the series in general. Read if you want to be entertained and aren't looking for anything with any depth.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read for teens I read the whole book series in highschool and loved it. I read the books before the TV series came out and the TV series is very different from the books

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing! This book is a great start to any series. It is a great story and has plenty of different things going on with each of the characters.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not my type of books. What more could I have expected to come out of this? Haha. These teen girl novels disgust me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gossip Girl One of the best teen series ever. Full of drama, and rich spoiled brats!! Its a good book, very entertaining and very much fun to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gossip Girl This was an exellent book, At first i thought it was kinda wierd, but after getting to know the characters, i loved it. It was very dramatic, but a normal teenage girl book. Very good!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from the TV show is much better I actaully read the books before watching the TV show. They were okay, but too gossipy for me. I know, it's called GOSSIP GIRL, but it jumped around too much. I love the TV show however, the books, not so much. The characters arn't very real in the books and I didn't care what happened to them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVE THIS BOOK!!! - SERIES!!! I think this is a fabulous book. This book was fun and flirty and I think this book is great for teens and adults. I would recommend reading the whole series.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Note to Giftlist-Toting Grandparents and Parents: Think Twice. As the Christmas season approaches, I find grandparents and parents who are blindly buying this book for tweens who are in love with Blair Waldorf and Serena van der Woodsen, of the popular Gossip Girl TV show. Blindly buying this book is disturbing and irresponsible because of these reasons: -Blair Waldorf is openly bulimic throughout the entire book -Blair Waldorf's stepfather-to-be and her boyfriend mock her for not losing her virginity -Serena van der Woodsen is suspected of dealing drugs, of having babies abroad, and of getting kicked out of boarding school for immoral acts -The girls are oversexed, overprivileged, and desensitized to their harsh actions to others and to themselves. Perhaps I am an idealist, but I don't believe that any grandparent or parent would openly give this book if they had were concerned for the healthy development of the teenage girl on their giftlist. If you have to buy this book-- I implore you to read it first. And be prepared to promptly return it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Horribly entertaining. Gossip Girl is so devilish it keeps you wanting more. The story line is so....whats the word...mean, that you can't help but want to get in on more of the gossip!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Interesting, fluffy beach read! I had to grad something to read on the beach and I remembered all the hype surrounding this "sex in the city" for the younger set. The book was a light, quick read full of brand name dropping, back stabbing and of course GOSSIP. It was similar to the Shopoholic series (with the brands being tossed in the mix). I will have to continue the series just to see what happens. I wouldn't recommend this for teens under 15.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Latest gossip: this book is bad I used to kind of like the series... -- This is what I think now: okay, lets face it. This series sucks..who cares that B wants to get into Yale? Its soo obvious that she will..and S and N? be real, its not meant to be..D and V they hate each other when they're together, and love each other when they're not.. WHO CARES. B is a stuck-up you-know-what, S is the one who gets everything, even though she doesnt want it.. every girl is in love with N...this is how it will always be, mkay? All the books are the same; same problems; same secrets; same stupid story.. I cant believe Ive wasted my time reading the first 8...it was only during the 9th one that I realized it wasnt getting any better.. I was just lying to myself like 'Oh, it'll get better, something good will happen' Guess what? NOTHING HAPPEND. I stopped in the middle of the book..I just couldnt continue.. Shallow girls who are obsessed with money and Coach bags and Clinique or whatever the latest trend is, will love this book..as for me? Id rather read something that has a plot and a point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! Well i absolutely loved this book. It made me want to read more and more. It's the perfect book for your 13-to-17 year old daughter. Its a book about teens so teens can really relate on these kind of books. Its absolutley fantastic to me!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Refund. Hearing about this acclaimed “hot” and “gripping” series, even comparing it to Sex and the City but for the younger readers, made me curious to see what the fuss is all about. What I found out however, after a 3 hour nonstop reading, is how superficial and shallow the series is. If there is anything accurate about what is said on the front and back cover of the book, it is that the book is indeed just plainly full of gossip: however, gossips that I did not at all care about. The characters lack dimensions; the plot lacks interest, and then finding myself turning page after page, hoping to find the reason why it became a bestseller. It was all about who’s hooking up with who, who’s wearing designer clothes, the wants and needs of popularity, wealth, fashion, boys, sex, drugs, and attention. May I add how this series is targeted to fifteen year olds? It’s exactly like a Weekly US magazine, reading about the latest gossip about your most loved or hated celebrity. As some people defend this book as a mirror image of today’s teenage life: sure, sex – fashion – popularity – are the way of life for some, or most teenagers, but if I was to read a book about it, I would expect a little more substance and depth for worthwhile reading. Which in this case, ended up being refunded. Now, after reading the whole book, relieved that it was done and found out what the fuss was all about… I was wondering how a book like this became a bestseller, especially with all the sex, the drugs, and the booze that these fourteen, fifteen, and sixteen year olds consume: and with all the superficiality that they cared about so much, no wonder our generation is so deeply “screwed” up. This is definitely not my idea of light reading. However, I give one star for ... the thrill... before reading it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting When I first picked up this book i had my doubts about it. But once i started to get in this novel I found myself becoming interested in the characters and the plot line. Yes this book is kinda "dirty" but its for teenagers and what we are experincing. These topics in this book hit most of those things.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a great book! Okay, this book is soo good! Its not cheesy and its so well written! The format is totally creative. Also, what the characters go through is just like what happens in real life. My friends and I dont live in Ney York but we all go to private schools and our lives are soo like this!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Awesome This book [series] is the best book and series ever! The author had a great way of writing the book. I totally recommend it to other teens out there! It's an awesome series! You have to read it!
Date published: 2006-07-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fabulous! I say that this books is a bit to matured and is meant for older teens, because of the content, although it is very interesting to look into the lives of the popular, pretty, rich, girly girls out there that act in such a way! It kind of sends a message that certain thing they are doing really aren't so good, and sets an example what you shouldn't do! Other parts can be good, and let you feel for a short while that you are them!!! Excellent Book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Scandalous This is one of those books about the girls we all want, and wanted to be. They seemed to have everything and get everything but this book gives you an inside look at the "pretty perfect lives" of the girls we all want, and wanted to be. It shows that their lives are far from "pretty and perfect" their lives are full of scandals
Date published: 2006-07-18
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not my type? This is one of those books that you stop reading after the first few chapters. It is much to like a lot of those other books out there. If your going to read this i would recommend it to older teens because it talks alot about the characters their sexual lives.
Date published: 2006-03-18
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Why? I do not, and never will understand how anyone can sit down and read a load of crap like this. The people in the book had no point to their lives and were shallow and stupid. Anyone who would sit down to read one of these should go and find something to do with their life!
Date published: 2006-02-13
Rated 1 out of 5 by from sucks! This book sucks! It's pointless and disgusting! Honestly, who cares why some girl got kicked out of boarding school? If you do, find something to do with your life!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Perfect Book! I loved the gossip girl book so much that once i started to read it, i couldn't put it down! i cant wait to get the next book to continue with the everyday adventures of high classed teens living in new york's upper east side!!!
Date published: 2005-06-27
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good... but not for kids under 17! This book is very good, but not for an audience under 17 or 18. A thirteen year old should definitely NOT be reading this- it has way too many adult references. Enjoy your youth, you have many many years to read or experience some of the things discussed in this book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from The worst book i've ever read!!! I love books alot, girly-girl books especially. My friend started reading the gossip girl series and liked them, so she thought i should read one sometime...BIG MISTAKE!!! I dislike the fact that on every page there is swearing, smoking, or cruel attitudes. Her best friend comes back and they havn't seen eachother for a while, and the main character 'Blair' can't even say hi?!? Skipping school, making herself trow up, I had to put this book down as i would have rather read about the Holocost!!!

Its hard for me to get into books, however, my friend started reading it and she said it was great, and reading Teen People Magazine I saw great reviews on it and I read it. I finished reading it in two days, which was fast for me, I couldn't stop reading. The amazing story lines kept me reading and the characters are so interesting. This book is great for girls who don't even like to read. I think guys would even enjoy it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from ^_*Incredibly Amazing*_^ Wow. Ok. Where do I begin? This book was amazing! I couldn't put it down. I'll admit. There were some things that weren't appropriate for certain ages. But c'mon. This book was so terrific. It's like Ziegesar went into the brain of a teen in high school and told you everything that was happening. This book couldn't BE any better. It was a terrific book. And i loved every second of reading it! I can't wait until I get the next one. I recommend this book to people between the ages of 14-18. But I have to say. I'm 13 and I read it. But I am forever moved and changed by this book. I'm now going to make these gossip girl books. My bible!=)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Horrible This book is one of the worst books i have ever read. It was so bad at capturing the esence of New York. I go to a private school, and none of the stuff in this book happen in real life. I don't think i should have been exposed to stuff like the content in the book. It had innapropriate terms that i should never have had to read at 16. Stop writing you are a blair wannabe. Nobody cares.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Socialite's Delight This book was so scandalous!! I absolutely loved it!! Reading it reminds me exactly of life living in Downtown Toronto. All I have to say that life without such bittersweet deciet would be soo boring, and these books are just the ticket to it all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Too good to be true!! I borrowed this book from a friend in reading class, so I wouldn't get in trouble for forgetting my own book--oops! and i just couldnt stop reading it!!! I went out and bought it last night!! It reminds me a lot of myself, without the major drinking, and smoking! But it's a great book, that I'm sure a lot of like at least 13 year old girls could relate to!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly Good I didn't expect the book to be that addicting, but it was. Storylines are great. It's a mini soap opera in a book. I have read the sequel and hope to see more coming!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ~Wow!~ This was a very addicting book!!! I would not recommend this book girls under 12 or people that can not read this book without their parents! I thought it was amazing! Go and get this book if u want to see what it is like to go to a private school. It hit it right on! All the gossip and cliques. It also shows that private school girls are not all that innocent. It's a Great book - I hope you enjoy it as well!!
Date published: 2003-01-12
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow! Cool Book I loved this book! It's got its own genre. It gives you a look at what it's like to live in NYC. Plus, all the details make you feel like you've seen the characters and have been to the places. If you're under 12, don't read! Bad book for book reports! ;~)

I would definetly recommend this book towards teens, it has the mysteries and surprises of gossip...in a good way! Yeah Gossip is bad! but hey this books got all the facts! Im surprised of all the love hate and admiration in this book!, and thats what makes it interesting and eventful, I cant help relating it to Betty and Veronica mags! 2 girls 1 boy! and alot of stuff in between! Seriously if your looking for a good read this book should be #1 on your list! Just as a reviewer said, Its sex and the city for the younger set!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Gossip Girl Gossip Girl is one of the most enticing books I have read in my life. All about rumours and deceit it makes you wonder about those situations if they were to happen or if they are really happening.
Date published: 2002-11-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gossip's never been so good This is basically a word of mouth book. It was recommended to me by my cousin, I recommended it to my friend and I don't know where it went from there but the point is, everybody loves it. It has the perfect mix of maturity and childishness (assuming that's a word) to keep everybody happy. It connects with people my age because no matter where they are, New York City, Lyndonville, Vermont or Sierra Madre, California, all teens have the same problems. Dealing with drugs (not the best example set here but who cares), boyfriends, first times, old friends, and family. Gossip Girl couldn't be considered 'just another teen angst book'. No way, the problems are too real when you have such a connection to the characters. I mean come on, who doesn't want Nate? Be honest. I promise not to tell.
Date published: 2002-11-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfection in a novel :) this book is really great. i can honestly say it is one of the best books i've ever read and i thought it was really enjoyable. YAY GOSSIP GIRL!!
Date published: 2002-09-10
Rated 5 out of 5 by from a really amazing book This book is GREAT!! It's different but wonderful! You really feel like you know the girls in the book and it gives you a chance to know what it's like being a 17 year old girl living in the upper east side of NYC! I definitely recommend this book, but to girls over the age of 13 and definitely do not read this book for school!
Date published: 2002-09-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Scandalously Surreal After first hearing about this novel, I thought it was a teen drama about a group of beautiful, popular, shallow high school students and their scandalous daily lives. My guess about the book was dead on. It is a trashy book targeted for older teens, and I don't think any of the characters have good human qualities. Instead, all they possess in their hearts are jealousy, selfishness and their obsession over appearance. The characters really are that terrible. But hey, that's what makes the book interesting.
Date published: 2002-08-25
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfection in a Novel! I loved Gossip Girl. It wasn't at all like I'd thought, but it was an extremely pleasant surprise. von Ziegesar's style is completely unique, and she creates lovable and equally detestable characters. I impatiently await a sequel.
Date published: 2002-08-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not For School Projects! Gossip Girl surprised me, it was different from what I thought it would be. It's more of a peek into the private life of New York's most elite than a full novel. It's full of scandal, gossip, and rumours. It's not a book for those under 12. It's a good read, and it makes you want to read more, but it seems kind of insensitive. Definitely not a book to do a book report on, if you left out all the grown-up parts, you wouldn't have a report!
