Wars, raids and rebellions have driven the history of Canada forward from the earliest days of New France, through the two world wars to the present day. Beginning with the Battle of Lake Champlain in 1609 and ending with the Second Battle of Panjwaye in 2006 (part of the war in Afghanistan), Great Canadian Battles features conflicts in Canada and abroad. Author Edward Humphreys analyzes the tactics, tragedies and triumphs of Canadian warfare, including military feats such as Colonel de Salaberry's unlikely victory at Chateauguay and the famous Battle of Vimy Ridge.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eh? but of course! Canadian War history usually focused a bit on Wolfe and Montcalm on the Battle of the Plains of Abraham, the War of 1812 (again mostly British with Canadian Militia sprinkled in) ,Battles of Vimy and Passchendaele, Dieppe and the Landings of Normandy. But it turns out there was so much more in between 1609 and 2006, from Champlain to Panjwaye (part of the war in Afghanistan). I wish the Battle for the Dutch Scheldt and landing on Sicily was included but otherwise it was an inspiring read. Many of the places listed in the Wars of the 1800's still exist and I found myself very engaged in reading this. For Canadian History buffs, a must read, and the same for War History buffs. Two Thumbs up!
