about

From choosing environmentally friendly diapers to identifying the hidden toxins in children's food, cribs, car seats, and toys, Green Mama discusses topics that are vitally important to new parents.

What are the most pressing problems facing new parents today? As the world has become increasingly more complicated, so has parenting. We are concerned about pervasive toxins in the environment and anxious to raise our children in ways that will protect them as well as safeguard our already fragile world.

Manda Aufochs Gillespie, the Green Mama, shares what today's science and Grandma's traditional wisdom tell us about prenatal care for mothers-to-be, breastfeeding, detoxifying the nursery, diapering, caring for baby's skin, feeding a family, and healthy play - redefining the basics of parenting for today's world. With an upbeat tone, stories of parents who have been there, real-world advice for when money matters more, and practical steps geared toward immediate success, The Green Mama engages and guides even the busiest, most sleep-deprived parent.

The Green Mama helps parents become what they were always meant to be: experts on the care of their own children.
Manda Aufochs Gillespie is a consultant, writer, environmentalist, and mother. She has worked in the "green" field for more than fifteen years, engaging directly with hundreds of parents through green living classes, consulting for homes and businesses, and through her writing. She lives in Vancouver.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for Mamas! This book made me aware in particular how much more vulnerable our children are to dangerous chemicals and toxins. However, despite some (appropriately) scary statistics and warnings The Green Mama is an empowering and enjoyable book. Pragmatic, thoughtful and timely - and even a good read for us Dads…. The Green Mama will be my main birthing gift for a long time to come!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for moms! In a time where the world puts more and more focus on interconnectedness, we cannot help but reflect on our own respective fields and see how one affects the other. In my field of education, you start to realize that your student’s success is not solely dependent on their ability or amount of effort invested, but also, nutrition, exposure to media, amount of play, etc. It is easy for many to say upon giving advice, even when asked by parents, to hear, “Oh, but you aren’t a mom.” Or perhaps, “You don’t have kids. You can’t understand.” The Green Mama provides a mother’s consciousness, backed with studies and solutions for the future. Perhaps many readers are intrigued by the mere interest of their own children, but my interest is in the well being of a classroom full of children. I rely on this information and the sharing of these perspectives in order to create a healthier me, a healthier classroom and healthier solutions and advice for parents. Thank you Green Mama, you truly are amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from a MUST have for any parents of any age. As a mother of one, a grandmother of two, a parenting coach to many, this is the one book I would have loved to have in hand while I was parenting, and beyond. Manda Gillespie has done a stellar job. How rare to find something that is both thoroughly researched and excellently written, beautifully presented and organized. Her guidance emanates from in-depth examination, a font of common sense, great practical tips and inspirational interviews with parents. The complimentary photographs are in each case additive and contributes to the beauty of this book. In a time when there is much that needs to be known, there is surprisingly little out there that does not add to the confusion or simple panic about all that is unsafe or potentially harmful or our little ones. The Green Mama is the exception. This is a book about hope for the future, but with eyes wide open; that I will be gifting to every family with young ones that I care about. For sure, I will keep a copy on hand for myself. Priya Huffman M.A. mother, grandmother, parenting coach, psychotherapist.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The one book you really must have for raising a child in Canada Finally it is here: the book that actually makes the work of parenting a bit easier. Even better, it is the first green parenting guide to focus on Canada: with research, interviews, data, stores, and resources specific to here. The book is upbeat, full of helpful get-started-now information, DIY recipes, sidebars on how to make healthier choices when you really don't have any extra money, and what to do for those living in the North or elsewhere with little access to better products.
