Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great! Great fantasy novel. The main character, Anita Blake, is one of my favorite fantasy characters of all time. This entire series is a great read and I highly recommend it to all fantasy lovers out there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best Vampire series Ever. No joke. If you were ever a Twilight fan, please, ditch that rubbish and pick up an Anita Blake book. There are 20 published Anita Blake books, with #21 being released this summer. Sometimes, when you're contemplating beginning a new series, knowing there are 21 books can be a bit daunting. But once Anita draws you in, and she will, I guarantee it, 21 is not NEARLY enough. What I love love love about the Anita series are the characters. There is great development, and each book sees every character growing in fantastic ways. Anita lives in St. Louis, in a world where Vampires are legal citizens. She works as an Animator (someone who raises the dead) and as a legal vampire executioner. Anita is one of the most bad ass female characters I've ever had the pleasure of getting to know (fictionally, of course). She is stubborn, she is tough as nails, she's got a mouth on her, she can't be bullied, she can fight, she's great with a gun, she's got guts galore, she's better than the boys. These books are packed with action, with suspense, with gore (there are tons of bloody murder scenes!). Some of my all-time favorite characters live within these pages (Anita, Edward, Jean-Claude!). As with a lot of books that are series, the first book is always the slowest, the most unsure, as there has to be plenty of development, but by book 3, I was so so hooked on Anita and her world that I read the entire series in just a bit more than a month. If you love the fantastical and love a great strong female lead, this series is for you. It will put every other vampire novel you've read to shame. And in response to the review below me, there is a lot of sex in the series but it only starts getting really intense around book 10, and it's pivotal to the storyline even if sex gets boring to read. Pick it up. You won't regret it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Enjoyable Anita Blake, vampire hunter, finds herself in some deep trouble when she attends her friend’s bachelorette party one night. When things start to go amiss, she finds herself dealing with old enemies, a vampire murderer, and a thousand-year old vampire who wants to see her dead. Now as she struggles to keep her friends safe while investigating a bizarre murder case, Anita is also fighting to stay alive long enough to see the morning and rescue a vampire who risked his life for her. I was actually really surprised at how well Hamilton wrote this novel. It was entertaining with suspense, thrills, romance and a plot that was not only interesting, but very believable at the same time. Hamilton was able to joke around a lot too, which made the book even more enjoyable. I can’t wait to get started on her sequel. :)

Rated 2 out of 5 by from disappointed I picked up this little book because of all the positive hype surrounding the series and as something to hold me over until the next sookie stackhouse comes out. Unfortunately Guilty Pleasures did not meet my expectations, although the character of Anita Blake is very three dimensional I just found the plot all over the place and i just couldnt really absorb myself in it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely a Guilty Pleasure This is the first book in the Anita Blake Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. Anita Blake is an animator which means she can raise zombies from the grave. She is also a vampire hunter who kills rogue vampires that were court ordered for their execution. Anita hates vampires, but she finds herself blackmailed into working for the city’s Master vampire Nikolaos. Anita needs to find out who is killing some master vamps or Nikolaos will kill her and her friends. I really enjoyed Anita’s character; she is strong, tough and has a good sense of humour. This book has plenty of horror and suspense and I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves the supernatural.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Lukewarm start Guilty Pleasures is Laurell K. Hamilton’s first novel featuring Anita Blake, Animator and sometimes Vampire hunter, and my first foray into Hamilton and Blake. Anita Blake lives in St. Louis where the Supreme Court has granted vampires equal rights. When a serial killer starts to murder vampires, Anita is enlisted by the master vampire to solve the mystery. While reading I was a little unsure of how I felt about Guilty Pleasures at first. I like Anita’s personality, her caustic, sarcastic wit. But I was also confused a little by some of Hamilton’s imagery. Like when Anita is locked in a cell by the city’s master vampire and she meets some wererats, like werewolves but rats. I couldn’t quite get the image in my head, nothing that looked sensible anyway. I kept seeing large puppet like creatures, or men in rat costumes. Also, I felt that the storyline kept jumping around a little, one minute Blake is at a freak party, the next she’s outside helping to raise a corpse. I did like the invention of the Church of Eternal Life, a church basically for vampire and those wanting to become vampires. As she explains in the book, it’s the only church that can guarantee true eternal life. This did seem like a first novel to me. However I can see that the character of Anita shows great promise and I am intrigued to read more. Story ** Characters **1/2 Readability ** Overall rating **1/2

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sucks you in and keeps you This is the first book in Hamilton's Anita Blake series. I first read it years ago and I have been a fan of the series ever since. This weekend I found myself in the mood to start back at the beginning (sometimes you just have to visit old friends). Anita Blake is an Animator - she can raise the dead. She is also the local vampire slayer, known within the vamp community as 'The Executioner', a fact that many people find hard to believe when they first meet her. One of the best lines in one of the books (I don't think it's this one) is when a guy says to the sexy but feisty Anita, "If only you matched your packaging". I can't print her response here, but let's just say Anita has an attitude and the mouth to back it up. This series is found in the horror section of the bookstore and that is where it should be. It is dark, gritty and graphic. If you are squeamish, maybe this isn't the book for you. But if you don't mind the dark, don't have a weak stomach and like a kickass heroine, you should definitely check it out. The story is fast-paced and the action brutal. It will suck you in and take you for a ride leaving you wanting more, but don't worry, there's plenty more where that came from...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent start to a series First book in the Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series. Along with being a Vampire Hunter, Anita is also an Animator of the Dead (she makes Zombies) and a consultant of the Regional Preternatural Investigation Team, R-P-I-T, a special police service. Someone is hunting and killing vampires. While she agrees to work with the police she is tricked into investigating on behalf of Nikolaos, Master vampire of the City. Anita doesn't like vampires, not at all and she likes Nickolaos even less. I really liked the character of Anita. Other than a most unusual job, she comes across as a person with the same job concerns and friend challenges as the rest of us. The image of her sleeping with a stuffed penguin after a rough day is very endearing. Each author takes licence with the 'rules' concerning vampires. Laurell has '4 marks' of the making of human into a vampire servant. Jean-Claude has applied two of these to Anita (to save her life?). It will be interesting to read how their relationship develops in future novels. I enjoyed "Guilty Pleasures" much more than I did "Cerulean Sins" which I reviewed recently. Lesson learned, start at the beginning of a series, don't jump in at Book 11.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I truly enjoyed the beginning of Anita Blake series. Although the police work parts didn't really interest me. I immensly enjoyed the characters involved. Edward was quite frightening, Jean-Luc was saucy, Bert was an ass, Ronnie was a great ally, Irving was the typical reporter, Monica was a moron, ahhh and lovely Philip simply broke my heart. I felt Anita was beautifully and realistically portrayed and I was happy to see that Hamilton wasn't in a rush to get her laid. She was unafraid to explore her main character. Loved it!!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Awesome Anita Blake Anita Blake is an awesome character! I LOVE her. In the other hand, the storyline is great, but not excellent. I really liked it, but I was hoping for "more suspense", "more thriller", "more excitement". Although I will read the second book, because I would love to know what Anita Blake is up to next! I do hope there'll be more excitement in the next story!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Quite enjoyiable. I wanted to read something fun and light before classes resumed in the fall, and my friend was reading a lot of this supernatural romances - so I asked her which ones were good (stearing away from the romance side and more to the horror side, cause I really liked buffy and stuff ... so I wanted the humour and the well researched paranormal filler with some needless sex ... of course). I looked at LA Banks and Vicci peterson ... or something like that ... the Sheerylynn Kenyon stuff ... and I went with this one. I'm so glad - it was exactly want I wanted. "It's like a R-rated Buffy the vampire slayer" - quote from the back of the book from some reviewer - they're right.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book This first in the series is excellent. I also have the graphic novel as well. It has my recommendation. Warning however, the first 7 books of her series are good, after that it is all downhill at warp speed but don't let that put you off Guilty Pleasures. It is still a good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mary-Sue At Her Best The Anita Blake series is not for the faint of heart with its graphic depictions of gore and horror. Other than that it's a fun, quick, easy read where the heroine's inner dialouge will make you smirk and laugh.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Start To A Series! A friend recommended this series to me while we were having a discussion on Tanya Huff, Kim Harrison and Kelley Armstrong. They are all rather wonderful horror-romance authors. If you enjoy supernatural thrillers with a darker edge to them you'll love this series. Anita is full of snark and dark wit and is easy to relate to. She has a rather interesting 'power', she can raise the dead. Oh and those squeemish about gore....I suggest you head somewhere else.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst either I like it when a female character is tough, but Anita Blake is a little too tough and the worst dressed character ever. I think if the author took half of Anita's tough guy attutide and gave to to Jean Claude, then the book would have been alot better. He was too femme for my liking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Read I'm an avid fantasy fan and this book combines all the great elements of a fantasy story into a world that's not so far from you and I. I would suggest this book for romance fans, fantasy, and fiction fans alike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Surprisingly fun I was surprised by how much I'm enjoying the Anita Blake books. I didn't think the vampire thing would do it for me. Honestly I adore the casual, conversational first person style of her writing. I find it relaxing while at the same time exciting and engaging. This is a fantastic book in a fantastic series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I couldn't put it down Amazing and captivating. Anita's sarcasm had me grinning like an idiot, and the suspence left holes in my arm chairs.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Give me a break I tried this book from a suggestion, and I wish I hadn't bothered. The storyline was okay, but Hamilton's writing style is atrocious. It's in first person, which is maddening in itself, but then she continues to write as if she's talking to one of her friends in a casual conversation. If you don't mind an easy read, and love vampires, you'll probably love this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Addicting I was given this book for my birthday and after I read it I promptly went out and bought the rest of the books in the series. I finished those 12 books in a week and a half. Laurell K. Hamilton is an awsome writer. I highly recommend her. I don't normally like books written in the first person, but with Hamilton I don't even notice. Anita Blake is cool, and Jean Claude is the best.
