Girl, Interrupted meets Beautiful Creatures in this fast-paced thriller

When sixteen-year-old Faye arrives at Holbrook Academy, she doesn't expect to find herself exactly where she needs to be. After years of strange waking visions and nightmares, her only comfort the bones of dead animals, Faye is afraid she's going crazy. Fast.

But her first night at Holbrook, she feels strangely connected to the school and the island it sits on, like she's come home. She's even made her first real friends, but odd things keep happening to them. Every morning they wake on the floors of their dorm rooms with their hands stained red.

Faye knows she's the reason, but what does it all mean? The handsome Kel tries to help her unravel the mystery, but Faye is certain she can't trust him; in fact, he may be trying to kill her - and the rest of the world too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wickedly Written and Highly Irresistible! Originally posted at http://dazzlingreads.blogspot.com Harbinger is an extraordinary and highly perturbing novel that will make your blood run cold! Sara Wilson Etienne's debut novel will insanely obsess you with this remarkable and masterfully written Psychological Thriller that you'll probably want to read over and over again! To write a summary of the book with my own words is pretty complicate because there is so much going on and I don't want to give anything away either. However, I don't think this is necessary because this is a book that you must-buy and MUST-READ as soon as it comes out! First, when I said "historical" it doesn't mean this is an historical novel. Not at all, but there is relevant historical information that I absolutely enjoyed discovering. Harbinger is definitely one of the genres that I am most fond of, Psychological Thriller. I love being confused in books to the point that I feel I'm going insane along with the characters. Sara Wilson Etienne successfully did this and many times, I had to put the book down to take a breath. In this case, putting the book down wasn't a bad thing at all because what's going on in Faye's life (the heroine) is absolutely overpowering that my own mind couldn't handle it for too long. Whoa! The story itself is like a snowball that grows and grows and the closer you get to discover the truth, the creepier things get. I absolutely love this about Harbinger; the world the author has created is such a bizarre, yet welcoming place. Etienne easily transports you to Holbrook Academy and into Faye's visions, giving readers a real taste of what it feels like to go insane. However, Faye is a very strong character and soon, she start to discover certain things that lead her closer to the truth of her visions and to what's going on in Holbrook Academy. In addition, there is Kel, a highly compelling and mysterious boy that brings the perfect amount of romance to this nail-biting thriller! Also, there is "the family" (the friends), the Takers (bad guys) Dr. Mordoch and Rita who complete the cast of this outstanding novel. Harbinger is an exceptional and captivating debut that gives readers so much more than just an addictive and remarkable story in a spellbinding setting. Harbinger carries a beautiful message and two alternative solutions to two important questions that yet have no answers. Sara Wilson Etienne has created a world where today's environmental problems can be solved and where part of an extinguished culture is still alive among us. Believe me, you have to read Harbinger! Wickedly written and highly irresistible, Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne is a marvelous eccentricity among the vast diversity of YA books that will certainly engrave its own mark in every readers' psyche for a very, very long time.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fingerless Gloves - Harbinger Makes Them Sexy *A copy was provided by the publisher pre-onsale date for review purposes* A Gem of a Mystery *Glares at the cover of Harbinger....and falls off her chair* I'm sorry but, I'm absolutely in love with the cover of Harbinger! Upon it's arrival in late October, I was instantly enamored. Presented uniquely in the form of a tarot card, the artwork featured on Harbinger is eye catching and extremely pulling. To be honest, I don't know how I was able to set the novel aside for review for as long as I did! However, when I did...I couldn't take my eyes off the cover. I found myself constantly taking sneak peeks at it between chapters. That, my friends, is die-hard cover love! Kudos to the creators behind the masterpiece. Moving on, I wasn't quite sure what to expect from Harbinger when I first received it for review. The synopsis was extremely pulling, however books shrouded with mystery don't always turn out to be as exciting as they are pitched. However, Sara Wilson Etienne's Harbinger instantly started off with a bang! Harbinger paints the picture of a helpless teen named Faye, who unfortunately is sent off to Holbrook Academy by her parents who worry about her mentality and safety. Holbrook Academy is a refuge for teens struggling to cope with reality. However, as lovely as that sounds, Holbrook Academy is built in the middle of nowhere, it's buildings looking similar to what you'd see in a prison. "Students" of Holbrook Academy are forced to take a variety of exotic and oddball "courses" that will teach them how to behave and be productive in society. Being the fierce protagonist that she is, Faye doesn't stand for it and instantly looks for a way out. Faye, upon her introduction, was a fairly peculiar character. She had a fascinating calm with animal bones that left me gawking with bewilderment and curiosity. Despite that rather bone chilling characteristic, I rather enjoyed reading her perspective. She was real, fun, and easy to connect with. In addition to Faye's character, there were several others at Holbrook Academy that made the story so much more fun and exciting! Each chapter revealed something interesting about them and lead me deeper into the mystery behind the academy. Fingerless Gloves - Harbinger Makes Them Sexy Now, let me tell you something about fingerless gloves; they aren't always sexy. However, there's a particular character in Harbinger that is, literally, bringing sexy back. (No kidding, he seriously does!) Introducing Kel, a mysterious hottie who loves to wear black...and fingerless gloves. I'm not sure how Sara Wilson Etienne did it but Kel seriously entranced me. Mind you, that is very difficult to do. The last author and character to do that to me, and I mean seriously make me fall in love with their male character, was Cassandra Clare's Mr.Desirable himself...MAGNUS BANE. (Yes, you heard me. I'm bringing Magnus into this!) Harbinger by Sara Wilson Etienne is a stunning debut, with a lethal dose of mystery and killer supernatural suspense! It's a pity that Harbinger is a standalone. After reaching it's conclusion, I found myself being eager for more!
