J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling was born in Gloucestershire, U. K. on July 31, 1965. Rowling attended Tutshill Primary and then went on to Wyedean Comprehensive where she was made Head Girl in her final year. She received a degree in French from Exeter University. She later took some teaching classes at Moray House Teacher Training College and a teacher-training course in Manchester, England. This extensive education created a perfect foundation to spark the Harry Potter series that Rowling is renowned for. After college, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International, where she researched human rights abuses in Francophone Africa, and worked as a bilingual secretary. In 1992, Rowling quit office work to move to Portugal and teach English as a Second Language. There she met and married her husband, a Portuguese TV journalist. But the marriage dissolved soon after the birth of their daughter. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. Rowling was working as a French teacher when her book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June of 1997 and was an overnight sensation. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award, and received a Commended citation in the Carnegie Medal awards. She also received 8,000 pounds from the Scottish Arts Council, which contributed to the finishing touches on The Chamber of Secrets. Rowling continued on to win the Smarties Book Prize three years in a row, the only author ever to do so. At the Bologna Book Fair, Arthur Levine from Scholastic Books, bought the American rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the unprecedented amount of $105,000.00. The book was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for it's American release, and proceeded to top the Best Seller's lists for children's and adult books. The American edition won Best of the Year in the School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Parenting Magazine and the Cooperative Children's Book Center. It was also noted as an ALA Notable Children's Book as well as Number One on the Top Ten of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults. The Harry Potter Series consists of seven books, one for each year of the main character's attendance at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. All of the books in the series have been made into successful movies. She has also written Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Childhood was Harry!!! Was an amazing experience to read these books as a kid. My Dad read me most of them but when I was older we would race to read them with two bookmarks! It was funny because if someone was ahead of the other we would bug them relentlessly until the caught up. "Did you read this part yet?!" "Don't TELL ME!" Ha!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book was the very first chapter book that I read all by myself in first grade! I only bought this book two weeks ago and I'm already on the second last chapter! This book was my very first chapter book that I finished all by myself in Grade 1! I am now 19 years old and soon to be 20 and I am still not bored of reading this series of books! I have seen all of the movies and I plan on buying the new Harry Potter book when it first comes out! I really do recommend this book as well as all the other ones in the series!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Harry Potter: Illustrated Edition I bought this for my mom for Christmas and wasn't really sure what to expect. I skimmed through it before giving it to her and thought the illustrations were very well done. The writing is quite large and some pictures take up a full page or more so I wasn't sure that the whole story would be there but it is. She absolutely loved it! I hope they continue with illustrated editions for the whole series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Exceptional Worldwide Phenomenon This novel was the begginning of what is, until today, the most read and sold books and movies collections. Indeed, for a whole decade, the entire world has been reading J.K. Rowling's novels. For myself, as I was 12 years old when the first Harry Potter movie was released, I started reading the novels. Being the same age the characters were in the collection, I identified myself to Harry Potter and hs friends. Accordingly, during my adolescence, I was growing each year with the characters and Ithink this is an important reason why I so much loved these books. Still, i cannot ignore J.K. Rowling's impressing talent in litterature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful I love the Harry Potter series and have read the set many times. It's great for all ages!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from good... A really fun book, with good story telling, but a bit cheesy at some points. The second time I read it I didn't enjoy it nearly as much as the first time. Overall, this book is perfect for the intended age demographic (10-12), but the whole, unicorn, magic wand, flying broomsticks stuff can be a little cringe-worthy in the in later years (But is still worth the time to read!).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Am I too old for Harry Potter? Nope! So, I will admit at 33, the idea of reading Harry Potter was just a ship that had long ago sailed. However, a friend of mine encouraged me to read it. And I loved it! The writing is so clever. The only thing I would recommend is making a list as you go of the characters and who they are...a few times I had to backtrack because I had forgotton who they are. Get a little forgetful in my old age! :) I look forward to passing this on to my children as they grow up and get to experience the magical creation of Harry Potter.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Mystical, Adventerous Read for All Ages Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone depicts the story of a young child originally raised by his abusive aunt Petunia and his uncle Vernon. As 11 year old Harry concludes that he will be doomed to a life of mistreatment, neglect, bore, and lack of maternal love, a mysterious letter is delivered specifically to the resident living in the cupboard under the stairs. This acceptance letter towards a school of witchcraft and wizardry leaves Harry to remain skeptical and unconvinced. As a close mentor, professor, friend and headmaster, Albus Dumbledore opens a new world of magic, wonder and even terror. In this new world currently hidden in our “muggle” world, Harry learns the truth about the love of his birth parents and even their famous world known death. Hysterical at first, Harry Potter wanted nothing more than to blend within the fabric of any educational institution to which he was placed, magical or not. However, during his new semester, Harry Potter gradually learns of the evil immortal mass murderer Lord Voldemort and soon realizes that escaping from his past is futile and thus, nothing is left to do but to confront the most evil character known in the world of magic and stop his reign of terror. This novel, suitable for all ages, supports many underlying themes that any reader can learn or relate to. Aside from the obvious good vs. evil theme, Harry Potter outlines the basis of all relationship encounters he has come across in his first school year. As an active reader, I recommend this novel to all age groups, as it gave me, and most likely all other readers, a chance to escape our normal functioning world to a place where anything can happen with a shake of a wand or mutter of a dark spell.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like visiting an old friend I've lost count to the number of times I've read J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. I love it so much. I've also enjoyed the movies but it's funny how you pick up little changes. Like when Harry gets onto Platform 9 3/4 it's not Ron Weasley who first befriends him, it's actually his twin brother Fred & George. For those who have not read the series it's a wonderful journey. It's like visiting an old friend who you can always turn to; to make you laugh when you are down. Hope you enjoy the MAGIC that is HARRY POTTER.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good start to the series! The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I'm not a child. But for a child who can read chapter books, it would really capture their imagination. The characters and settings are so original. The situations are easy for a child to understand with minimal adult help. I wish I was a child when I first read it!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! I read this a few times before proceeding tot he others. IT was absolutely amazing. The wizarding world is a very vast thing to portray and J.K. Rowling did a beautiful job of doing that. The characters are lovable, and the plot line addicting. It leaved you hungry for more! You have to read this original piece.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW This book had everything! magic dragon's and more. The characters in this book were well described. The only one i didn't understand was Quirrell, But that was good to end the story. This book was about a kid that was almost killed goes to a school of magic. The book was well laid out and ended great! It had all the main points and activities. This was a good beginning to the harry potter series. I need to read the rest of the series to see what happens next. I think you should read the whole series! It was great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Start to a series you will ever read! I started reading Harry Potter 5 years ago, and absolutely loved it. Since I first finished the series, I have read EACH of the books over 10 times. So, I know what I'm talking about. Now, onto the Review. I found this book captivating, inspiring, and hard to put down. The first chapter, is just a bit hard to get past, but I assure you it's like that in any book you will ever read. Wether it be Stephen King, or George R. R. Martin. After you get past the first chapter the book gets good. But, not until Harry goes to Diagon Alley. Then it gets way more interesting. J.K Rowling has great word choice, and she really makes the picture pop. Even if your one of those people, who cannot picture the "BIG" picture and read, by saying this, you can't see anything until you've seen the movies, then you say "OH! Thats what that looks like!" No matter what age you are, no matter what genre your into. I insist you pick up this book, and start reading. RIGHT NOW! This is a guaranteed book that you will never be able to put down until you finish it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular... To be honest, I never connected to the Harry Potter books like most around me. I was never caught up in the hype and excitement of each consequential launch, nor did I delve into the books as soon as I took them home. For me, my introduction to the series was through the movies, and only by viewing the films was I able to finally see what everyone had been talking about. By time the first film finished, I knew automatically that I would be getting whatever books were out on the way home, and that I would finally have the opportunity to see what everyone had been talking about. Now what can I say about the book that countless millions before me haven’t said better and more succinctly. In just 223 pages, J.K.Rowling manages to not only set up the beginning of a grand saga, but does it in such a way that you manage to connect with the characters; but she also describes things in such detail, that your imagination easily visualises what is being said. The history of this world, the circumstance of being thrust into a role you know nothing about, and the pure excitement, fear, and anxiety of delving into unexplored territory, completely comes alive in the pages of the novel. The characters seem real, the humour is never forced, and the emotions felt by those in the story resonate with the reader. This is truly some exceptional storytelling, and by the end you’ll find yourself looking forward to the next chapter. Buy this book, you won’t regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A magical start to one of the best journeys I ever took The Harry Potter series was, and is, a huge part of my life. So many memories focus around reading (and re-reading) these novels. I recommend them to everyone I meet at work, even though by now its hard to find people who have not read them. I honestly liked the books as they continued on (and got larger, of course) but reading this book as a child opened up my mind to a whole new world. I have probably read these novels more than any other books I own, and still I long to read them again and again. Harry Potter's world is something I never grow tired of, or grow too old for.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Harry got my kid hooked on words! I was having a hard time transitioning my 5 year old from picture books to word-only books during storytime. Then came Harry! I think that because the images are so strong and the pace is fast, this is a great way to get kids listening to longer stories. Oh yeah, and Mom gets to read something fun as well!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from UGHHHH It didn't keep my interest and it's a very typical book about a poor little orphan boy who discovers he's a wizard. It was boring and there are so many books like it. I would not reccomend it if you are looking for a different sort of book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Reeled me In I was completely adverse to trying out the new "Harry Potter" craze until I received this book for my birthday and decided to give it a try. From the very first paragraph I was completely hooked; on the style of writing, the world of magic and the series of Harry Potter. I've since re-read this book at least 20 times and I love it more each time.

Harry, Aunt Petunia, and his horrid cousin Dudley have all been moved to a shack by Uncle Vernon because of some strange letters that have been addressed to harry's name- and each one has been ripped up by the greedy Uncle Vernon's hands. Uncle Vernon has been doing anything to stop the letters coming, but they had gotten into the house anyway. Right now there was a storm raging on outside of this miserable shack where four miserable people are, one (Harry) an orphan, and the other three, the Dursleys. KNOCK, KNOCK,KNOCK! Harry is the only one awake to hear the knocking, but ignores it.BAM! A giant enters, says " Harry, you're a wizard and you're coming to Hogwartswith me, " Could it be true?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Book 1: Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone captivates the reader and brings them on a winding journey of fantasy, humour, adventure, and suspense. Rowling's artistic use of descriptive language allows you to picture the characters and brings you right into the scenes with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Her fantastic story lines keep you reading helplessly until the very last syllabal. How lucky that we get to experience the brialliance that is Harry Potter, something that will be passed on from generation to generation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than the others! I thought that The Philosopher's Stone was a lot better than the other Harry Potter books, with the exception of The Goblet of Fire. This one has plenty of detailed adventures, mysteries, and suspense; perfect for a novel. It's just too bad that most of the others aren't as wonderful.

How else can I explain it? Hogwarts... the soting hat... Harry's a wizard!... Rated 4 out of 5 by from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone Of the books I have read recently, my favourite work of fiction is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling. It’s a book about a boy (Harry Potter) who learns he's a wizard. I enjoyed it because it was the perfect mix of humour, adventure and fantasy. The characters had depth too. When you read the book the picture comes to your head instantly. She had a well-conceived language- you know what she means immediately. The setting is at Hogwarts, many miles outside of London, England. Hogwarts is a castle-school of witchcraft and wizardry. Because there are so many rooms and corridors and you can get lost- but Fred and George have a magic map. The Philosopher's Stone is so engaging that I had trouble getting to sleep because I wanted to keep reading the next chapter.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great things come in small packages When I finished the first chapter of this book, I was really anxious to read on to the next chapter. This is one of the many rare books after you've read some, you don't, or even can't put it down. I know this is definately a spectacular book, because, I HATE reading books. I'm a picky person!I'm glad there will be more books like these to come a long. I wish that there was more then 7 books though.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Jade's Harry Potter Review Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is a novel about a boy named Harry who's parents die and he is sent to go live with his mean aunt and uncle. They make him live in a closet in the basement. One day Harry gets a letter from Hogwarts School of Whitchcraft and Wizardry. Soon he is on his way there. He leaves his aunt and uncle to live at the school. My favourite part of the story is when Harry puts the sorting hat on. I think this is a good book for ages 10 and up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Not just for KIDS! These books are not just for kids you know! After seeing news report after news report, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. I bought the first book and when I started to read it i couldn't put it down. I'm 19! At school I over heard a friend of the same age talking about the books. I couldn't believe that she was reading them too. It turned out that at least 5 other people I know-all in high school-were reading these books and enjoying them as much as myself. We recomend this book to people of ALL AGES!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Harry (very) Amazing! It all started when I needed a book for a fantasy book report. I could not find anything I enjoyed. That's when I decided to try Harry Potter. All along when everyone else in the world was rushing to buy the newest most fabulous Harry Potter book I sat back and thought thpse books are for babies. But now ever since I've tried them they are amazing. I have ordered the next books. In Harry Potter and the Philospopher;s Stone Harry Potter the most famous wizard without realization ends up going to a wizard school and overcoming many obstaclesto save himself and his school from the wizard who once tried to kill him.Join Harry Potter and his friends through a bewitching tale of magic. Just like a fairy tale. Truly remarkable. Bound to be a classic. If your hesitating whether or not to spend the $10-$20 bucks on these books, go for it. Every kid will love it! Guarenteed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Review of Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone has Tones of adventure, that is why it is a must read. I would consider reading series in order because first one really thoroughly explained how it all started and without reading this one some parts of the others would not make any sense. Believe me, I have read the second one and without the first one I would have stopped reading. This book is a great book and I could not stop reading it unless I was forced. I read this in two or three days, that's how interesting it is. J.K. Rowling never stops the adventure by making the main character and his friends step out of the line, break rules and almost getting suspended. That is how she keeps you interested. Another thing is the title is not even mentioned, nor explained until about the 100th page. I love Harry Potter and his adventures and I recommend this to kids of all ages. If you can get this book get it, it is the absolute best book I have read (and I have read a lot of books). That is my review of this outrageously exciting book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent! The Harry Potter series is an EXCELLENT read, for young and old alike! I originally just wanted to see what the hype was about so I picked up this book while in Chapters and started reading... by page 3, I was hooked and bought all 4 books then and there. Having finished all 4 books within a week (yes, they are THAT good!), I truly look forward to more. Kudos to J.K. Rowling for capturing the imagination of readers everywhere!
