about

J. K. (Joanne Kathleen) Rowling was born in Gloucestershire, U. K. on July 31, 1965. Rowling attended Tutshill Primary and then went on to Wyedean Comprehensive where she was made Head Girl in her final year. She received a degree in French from Exeter University. She later took some teaching classes at Moray House Teacher Training College and a teacher-training course in Manchester, England. This extensive education created a perfect foundation to spark the Harry Potter series that Rowling is renowned for. After college, Rowling moved to London to work for Amnesty International, where she researched human rights abuses in Francophone Africa, and worked as a bilingual secretary. In 1992, Rowling quit office work to move to Portugal and teach English as a Second Language. There she met and married her husband, a Portuguese TV journalist. But the marriage dissolved soon after the birth of their daughter. It was after her stint teaching in Portugal that Rowling began to write the premise for Harry Potter. She returned to Britain and settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister, and attempted to at least finish her book, before looking for another teaching job. Rowling was working as a French teacher when her book, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June of 1997 and was an overnight sensation. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone won the British Book Awards Children's Book of the Year, was shortlisted for the Guardian Fiction Award, and received a Commended citation in the Carnegie Medal awards. She also received 8,000 pounds from the Scottish Arts Council, which contributed to the finishing touches on The Chamber of Secrets. Rowling continued on to win the Smarties Book Prize three years in a row, the only author ever to do so. At the Bologna Book Fair, Arthur Levine from Scholastic Books, bought the American rights to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for the unprecedented amount of $105,000.00. The book was retitled Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for it's American release, and proceeded to top the Best Seller's lists for children's and adult books. The American edition won Best of the Year in the School Library Journal, Publishers Weekly, Parenting Magazine and the Cooperative Children's Book Center. It was also noted as an ALA Notable Children's Book as well as Number One on the Top Ten of ALA's Best Books for Young Adults. The Harry Potter Series consists of seven books, one for each year of the main character's attendance at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. All of the books in the series have been made into successful movies. She has also written Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Quidditch Through the Ages, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic HP Illustrated editions and where to find them... These are a wonderful edition to collect. If you are new to Harry Potter, what a truly amazing edition to read and experience the adventure for the first time. If you are an 'old fan', this familiar story you've come to love is brought to life by the absolutely beautiful illustrations that accompany the story throughout! I am looking forward to owning the complete collection and hopefully one day being provided with grand-babies to read to so I can relive the magic all over again through the eyes and ears and hearts of the next generation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rereading the series The set up of the world is incredible. The characters are not very developed, which is understandable, but the sheer amount of imagination that went into building this book is amazing, especially knowing how complex the story becomes later in the series.

I couldn't stop reading this book once starting, it became an instant addiction and even though I knew the ending ( I saw all the movies before reading the books) I just couldn't wait to read it. Totally Worth it for your collection!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The illustrated philosopher's stone Oh. My. Goodness. If you thought you loved the books, wait until you SEE the books as they happen. Better than a movie, in my opinion. Plus, it introduces Harry Potter to a bunch more people, as many (I don't understand them) prefer pictures over reading. Great way to keep kids involved!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from love, love, love I'm quite late to the bandwagon and just finished the first Harry Potter book, but my GOODNESS, I am completely in love with the story. The book really makes you feel good while reading about all the magical experiences Harry goes through during his journey. The only thing I don't like is that I've waited all these years before picking up this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does it get any better? Harry Potter is a classic and one of the few series that has remained a constant in the everchanging pile of books kept in prime position. As you've no doubt heard, it takes you on a wonderful ride filled with twists and turns and wonderful characters. It has lessons, but not corny ones that are shoved down your throat. My one piece of advice? Make sure to finish the first book before you write off Harry Potter as overrated. The first couple of chapters really don't set the tone for what's to come.
Date published: 2017-06-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Childhood Memories I have and always will love Harry Potter because it holds a special place in my heart as it was a large part of my childhood. It is a great book (and series) full of lovable characters and plenty of adventure!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEAUTIFUL I bought the full paperback box. The books are really pretty and very good quality. I had never read the Harry Potter books before, just finished #1. It's very simply written ( for all ages) and still very enjoyable to older readers. It makes for a fun light read and I found myself stressing wiht Harry over certain event even though I knew from the movies what was going to happen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Fantastic Read The Philosopher's Stone follows a young boy named Harry who lives with his unaffectionate aunt, uncle, and cousin. His ordinary life turns around when he discovers he is in fact a wizard, and is requested to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. There, he meets his friends Ron and Hermione, and together they uncover astonishing truths and go on fantastic adventures. I was already familiar with the whole Harry Potter universe before reading this book. But I sure am glad I decided to read the series -- from where it all started! The books are way more detailed than the movies and offer much more room for imagination. It was like I was there with Harry, and experiencing everything like he was. Indulge in this world of fantasy and adventure, you will not regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unforgettable read This was the first novel that I can remember reading. I've had the chance to read in in elementary school, and can still appreciate the novel that it is today. This is a complete page turner. Even if you consider yourself a slow reader, this is certainly the type of novel that one could finish over the course of the weekend and will have you excited for book two. Though it may seem overrated, this could not be further from the truth. This is a novel that holds up. Well worth the time reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! If you're an extreme Potterhead you already know since you have a copy, but these books are beautiful and are a must have addition to a book shelf. The artist illustrated them so well. Though I adore the cast of the movies, it's nice having imagery from the books that don't directly resemble Emma, Rupert and Daniel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nostalgia definitely helps this book I love Harry Potter, truly. I actually watched the movies before reading the books but that didn't affect my enjoyment, especially since they're quite different in certain parts. This was my first reread and it was a nice beginning. I do think this book is great and deserves its success, but I wonder what I would've thought about it if I could erase all memory of it and start again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Still magic after 20 years! I was in the third grade when I first met The Boy Who Lived. Our teacher, Mrs. Morgan, started reading it out loud to us one day and by the time she finished reading the first chapter I was hooked. I was so enamoured by the book that I begged my mom to take me to the bookstore so I could buy my own copy. (Or rather, so she could buy it for me. Thanks, mom!) Now in possession of the book, I raced through the story alongside Harry, Ron, and Hermione, battling mountain trolls, playing Quidditch, and rescuing the Philosopher's Stone. By the time, I got to the last page, that was it for me - I was completely head-over-heels in love. I know that with a lot of readers of my generation, Harry Potter was what got them into reading. It was different in my case, however, because I was already a huge bookworm before I read Harry Potter. I loved books before I even knew how to read them. (Strange, but true.) So I was always a book lover but when Harry Potter came along...it was like meeting my soulmate. Or soulbook, as it were. (Is that a thing? It should be.) This year marks the 20th anniversary of the publication of Philosopher's Stone. Since then, we've seen Harry Potter movies, theme parks, a play, official Harry Potter websites, fansites, countless merchandise, and crazy amounts of fanfiction and fanart. Which leaves the question: does the book that started a global phenomenon still hold up? Short answer: Yes. Always. I get so much more out of Philosopher's Stone as an adult then I did when I was a kid. When I was younger, it was just a fun adventure story with dragons, magic spells, and the most incredible school for wizards and witches that I wanted to go to soooo badly! (I remember turning 11 and actually hoping I would get my Hogwarts letter.) Now as an adult, I can appreciate the depth of J.K. Rowling's knowledge of her own world, the allegories, the symbolism and all that good pretentious English-major kind of stuff. All the things an adult reader is 'supposed' to appreciate - but I still have so much fun reading it. Rowling's writing is witty, straightforward, and smart. She never condescends to her audience - something that I believe is one of the reasons the Harry Potter books have stood the test of time. While Philosopher's Stone can be read and enjoyed by children, she introduces enough dark elements to make the book compelling for adults as well. I mean, the book starts with an infant boy becoming an orphan because his parents were murdered. That's pretty depressing stuff. But Rowling is wise not to fill the first book with doom and gloom. The reader is dazzled as we see the fantastic magical world through Harry's eyes for the first time. The scene in Diagon Alley where Harry first experiences the wizarding world is pure delight. Rowling is a master of worldbuilding - she gives us just enough detail to get a clear idea of the world but she does not inundate the reader with description that goes on for pages at a time. Classic examples include the scene in Diagon Alley, Harry and Ron eating magical treats on the Hogwarts Express, and the brief descriptions of the classes at Hogwarts. She makes it real, she makes it tangible while keeping an underlying logic and consistency throughout. No matter how great the worldbuilding is, the heart of Philosopher's Stone is the characters. Characters who we fall in love with because we relate to them. I can't think of any other literary characters who are more real to me than Harry, Ron, and Hermione. Great as individual characters but even better together as 'The Golden Trio.' They complement each other so perfectly - Hermione is the Mind, Ron is the Heart, and Harry is the Soul. Together, they are truly a magical combination. When I first read Philosopher's Stone, I had no idea of the phenomenon it would become. No matter how old I am, I always enjoy returning to it again and again to relive the magic once more.
