Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why didn't I know about this book earlier? I was recommended this book, and it instantly became my favourite parenting book. The sleep deprived child that Weissbluth describes was our baby boy! I got fast results for a child that was becoming increasingly irritable, frustrated and aggressive. I liked Weissenbluth's statement that babies should not have to cry themselves to sleep - if they are crying themselves to sleep, then caregivers aren't putting them to bed early enough. I had previously been trying to rock and gently coax our little guy to sleep when he started to rub his eyes and whine, resulting in tantrums. I didn't realize that he needed to have naps after only being wakeful for an hour and a half at a time. I have since been picking up on his sleepy cues far earlier, and putting him to sleep directly in his bed - the result being an altogether less stressful bedtime for both of us, and a happier, more relaxed and rested baby. Now I am trying to figure out how I can spread the word about this book to all new parents!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Other books are better... This book has some good information, but it's all very disjointed and his belief in the "cry-it-out" technique seems harsh. I'm sure "cry-it-out" works, but there are other ways to help your little one sleep well. Get "The No-Cry Sleep Solution" by Elizabeth Pantley instead - it has all the great info but Elizabeth is sensetive to the emotions you and your baby feel. My little 6 month old boy and I are much happier following her advice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Have!!!! About a month after we brought our son home, we started our research on how to establish his sleep routine. He was very fussy at bedtime and was difficult to put down for daytime naps. We read a number of books without any success. Finally, at 4 months of age, this book was recommended to us and within one day of implementing Dr. Weissbluth's suggestions, our son was sleeping through the night and napping wonderfully through the day. We were very lucky to have immediate results, but every child is different and some may take longer to settle into their new routine. I swear by this book and highly recommend it to anyone who is having difficulty establishing a sleep routine for their child/children.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Enormously helpful A great book for your first or third child. I keep it at arms length at all times. The book has helped us through some tough nights. It improved our girls sleep quality and their "attitude" during the day. No more fussy time at night for both the girls.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A must We started to use this book with our first child when he was around 3 months. He is now two years old and sleeps 11-12 hours a night and naps every day without a problem. Although I find some of the suggestions harsh (specially if it is your first child), it's amazing to see the accuracy of the guidelines (6 week crying peak, window of 1-2 hours for a baby to nap, etc.) My second child is now 5 months old and this book continues to be a great source of information.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Frustration I find this book very frustrating. I find the information all over the place and at times contradictory. He also keeps bringing up exceptions that throw his theories off. At the end of a chapter I still don't know what I am supposed to do. Not helpful at all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from God Sent I wish I would've read this book 5 months ago!! Although the information is GREAT, the organization of the info isn't as clear as it could have been. However, the book covers from newborns to teens, different types of babies and parenting styles, and lets you choose which approach best suits your family. After 2 days of applying the books' strategies, I now have a 5 month old who sleeps through the night, and never fusses when put down for naps. A true must for all new parents!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of great info, but a bit disorganized As a new parent I found this book very useful. It went through all the different stages of normal sleep patterns for a newborn right up to a toddler. There is almost too much information in this book and although attempts are made to organize it well (like summaries at the end of each major section, and breaking it down into age categories), I still found that I really needed to wade through all the info to find out what I needed to know, and then even reread it later. Another thing I liked about this book is that he doesn't advocate you must let your child cry it out but rather says if there is no sleep problem, there is no reason not to nurse or rock your baby to sleep. All in all, a good reference, just be prepared to read it several times!
