Rated 5 out of 5 by from Joseph Conrad Heart of Darkness...the horror! Amazing. The book contains Heart of Darkness and other short stories. It can be a difficult read in some places (the book was written in 1899) but absolutely worth it. I had to google a dozen words for the definitions and re-read a few sections. But in the end this is one of the most realistically descriptive books I have read if that makes any sense. It is not a horror books but it is scary.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Description This book provided a vivid description. It is very hard because of the wording.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Dark I've had this book on my book shelf for about three years now, every since my grandfather passed away and it's just been itching me to read it. I'm not quite sure how I feel about it, I just felt I had to read it. It's one of those books your "suppose" to read. I find that the book stays true to the title. I think that's what bothers me the most about the book, but also makes it a book you should read, is the darkness. It's so unnerving and sad to say but present in today's society as it was when the book was written . . . cold . . . ruthless . . . human nature. . .

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Ever Wonder? Ever wonder how the story of a harpy Bianka - a decendent of the king of evil, and Lysander a heavens angel end up together? Look no further. Gena Showalters short stroy made this book for me. I laughed at the carzy antics of a stone faced Angel, and the naughty Harpy. Their love was exciting, and interesting, can love over come all the differences in these two characters? In a Gena Showalter story, you can bet it will never be easy. Worth the read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Worth it for Fans of Gena Showalter's Lords of the Underworld series. Heart of Darkness is an anthology of three stories by Gena Showalter, Maggie Shayne, and Susan Krinard. I purchased the anthology for The Darkest Angel by Gena Showalter because it is considered #4.5 in her Lords of the Underworld series. The Darkest Angel is a fabulous story. It features Bianka (sister of Gwen from book 4 in the series) and an Angel named Lysander. The plot is super sexy, hilarious, and so much fun to read! Bianka has tons of attitude, and when combined with the stiff, anal Lysander the whole story is just so comical and amusing. I went from fanning myself from the heat going on between the characters to laughing out loud. The Darkest Angel was a great glimpse of the angel lifestyle and when read before The Darkest Passion, it genuinely does increase the readers understanding and enjoyment of Aeron’s story. My only complaint was that it was utterly too short. I would have LOVED a full length novel featuring those two. That said, I’d still give that story 5/5 for sure! The other two stories were less entertaining, but I’m the type who feels the need to complete a book even if I’m not that into the stories. While they both did have a paranormal element going on, it wasn’t what I expected in either story. I felt that the characters were less amusing, relatable, and entertaining than the ones in The Darkest Angel. I guess they felt sort of flat to me. Love Me to Death by Maggie Shayne felt more like romantic suspense than paranormal romance to me, even though there was a small paranormal element. Perhaps fans of romantic suspense would get more enjoyment out of it than I did because that’s not really my genre. Lady of the Nile by Susan Krinard, had potential, especially with the Egyptian theme going on. It just never developed into what I was hoping for. I think it needed more room to be explored and to develop. Fans of Gena Showalter’s LOTU series should check this out for her story because it’s great, but otherwise I’d pass on it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Read it for Gena's story Kind of a mismatched group of stories here. The first half of the book is "The Darkest Angel", part of the Lord of the Underworld series, and as usual Gena Showalter does not disappoint. It takes a different perspective and revolves around the character Lysander, an angel, instead of the Lords. I found the story very humorous and found myself wishing it was a book of its own. The other two stories in the book (written by Maggie Shayne and Susan Krinard) though interesting, seemed like a totally different genre. Or maybe it was just me. Regardless, if you are a Lords of the Underworld fan (and don't subscribe to ebooks) you need to buy this book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from 'The horror, the horror' While I read Lord Jim about 5 years ago, Heart of Darkness isn't something I picked up until this Christmas break. A thought-provoking novel and at times difficult to read. As many people have said it truly is one of the essential reads of the 20th century. Some may get more out of this novel than others as an understanding of the history of the Congo during the era of Leopold II will give a better appreciation of Conrad's work. A good book overall. Also, Heart of Darkness has one of my favourite endings ever, ranking just below the encounter of Humbert and Quilty in Lolita.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I read it because I felt I had to. I read it because I felt I had to. It was one of those books, and I have more than a few on my shelf now, that you simply get told again and again that these are VERY IMPORTANT BOOKS, and YOU MUST READ them. I thought it was good and all, and I made it to the end, but I didn't leave with any new understanding. Except maybe for that passage about the Thames in Roman times. ...Which has something to do with the title of the book, the Heart of Darkness, warning against hubris in a strange land, but also warning that success isn't all it's cracked up to be. Soon after I read this, I rented Apocalypse Now, and that clarified things a little bit, at least in my mind, about what it means to "win" a war.

Read from the Book

From high in the heavens, Lysander spotted his prey. At last. Finally, I will end this. His jaw clenched and his skin pulled tight. With tension. With relief. Determined, he jumped from the cloud he stood upon, falling quickly… wind whipping through his hair…When he neared ground, he allowed his wings, long and feathered and golden, to unfold from his back and catch in the current, slowing his progress. He was a soldier for the One True Deity. One of the Elite Seven, created before time itself. With as many millennia as he'd lived, he'd come to learn that each of the Elite Seven had one temptation. One potential downfall. Like Eve with her apple. When they found this…thing, this abomination, they happily destroyed it before it could destroy them.Lysander had finally found his.Bianka Skyhawk. She was the daughter of a Harpy and a phoenix shape-shifter. She was a thief, a liar and a killer who found joy in the vilest of tasks. Worse, the blood of Lucifer—his greatest enemy and the sire of most demon hordes— flowed through her veins. Which meant Bianka was his enemy. He lived to destroy his enemies. However, he could only act against them when they broke a heavenly law. For demons, that involved escaping their fiery prison to walk the earth. For Bianka, who had never been condemned to hell, that would have to involve something else. What, he didn't know. All he knew was that he'd never experienced what mortals referred to as "desire."Until Bianka. And he didn't like it.He'd seen her
