"Giffin excels at creating complex characters and stories that ask us to explore what we really want from our lives."--Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Tessa Russo is the mother of two young children and the wife of a renowned pediatric surgeon. Despite her own mother's warnings, Tessa has recently given up her career to focus on her family and the pursuit of domestic happiness. From the outside, she seems destined to live a charmed life.

Valerie Anderson is an attorney and single mother to six-year-old Charlie--a boy who has never known his father. After too many disappointments, she has given up on romance--and even to some degree, friendships--believing that it is always safer not to expect too much.

Although both women live in the same Boston suburb, the two have relatively little in common aside from a fierce love for their children. But one night, a tragic accident causes their lives to converge in ways no one could have imagined.

In alternating, pitch-perfect points of view, Emily Giffin creates a moving, luminous story of good people caught in untenable circumstances. In Heart of the Matter, each is tested in ways they never thought possible. Each questions everything they once believed. And each ultimately discovers what truly matters most.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A solid contemporary. Heart of the Matter is the first book I have read by author Emily Giffin and it certainly won’t be my last. I would recommend this solid contemporary story to fans of the genre.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another great read Emily Giffin is a talented writer that creates an enemy that is hard not to love. This book is an easy read but will not leave you dissappointed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hard to Put Down. A Story Well Told. This was my favourite Emily Giffin book. Mistakes are made, and people are hurt, but nobody is the villain. It's an honestly told story about situations that good people find themselves in, about overcoming and forgiveness. I enjoyed this book so much, and was sorry to finish it. I wish there was a sequel so I could continue to read about the lives of these characters and see what their futures hold.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good read Not my favourite from her but still a good read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it!!! I bought this book, not having any expectations. In fact I had halfway read through her last book, Something Borrowed and given up. But was I richly rewarded by reading this. Not at all what I expected. The characters were totally relatable. I found myself understanding both Tess and Valerie's point of view. Emily Giffin has written a gem of a book and I highly recommend it to all those who enjoy a book that humanizes fictional characters

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A sad story I wanted to give this book 2 stars, but because I was curious (until the end) to see how it ended, I gave it 3 stars. It was mostly just a sad book. Tessa, the unhappy stay-at-home mom. Nick, the mal-contented husband. Valerie, the single mother coping with an injured child. Sad sad sad. There is a nice Rachel/Dex overlap from the "Something Borrowed" series - and at least they were happy! This book could have used some chapters from Nick's perspective (it alternated Tessa and Valerie's perspectives, which was a good feature). Nick, what on earth were you thinking?? Not the light read we usually expect from Emily Giffin.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Touching and Thought provoking! Another great book by Emily Giffin. I love her writing style. A touching story with a couple of twists, thought provoking. You really need to think about what you would do in this situation.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT! After reading the back of the book, I was a little hesitant to buy it as it seemed like it would be a bit dry - definetaly not dry at all. I thought the characters wer COMPLETELY believable and was suprised by how much I enjoyed the book from start to finish. I have read all of Emily Giffin's novels and this one I found to be one of the best, but still think Baby Proof takes the top spot.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not Her Best This is a spin-off from "Something Borrowed". The story involves Dex's sister, Tessa and her husband, Nick, and a incident that alters there life together. The story is not bad it is just that the characters and their choices lack believability.

Editorial Reviews

"[A] modern-day Jane Austen." -Vanity Fair"In HEART OF THE MATTER, [Giffin] again uses her great wit and gift of storytelling to weave a tale that's nuanced, empathetic and, at times, heartbreaking. Matters of the heart are always complicated, and Giffin deftly shows you why." -Associated Press"Giffin's latest opens with one of the more haunting scenes in recent memory [and] towards the end things are so tense that the pages pop with each turn." -People"With [an] adulterous path outlined, Giffin could easily take sides. But she doesn't. Instead, she alternates between Tessa's and Valerie's points of view, dissecting the feelings and insecurities that can dismantle even the most intelligent people. Amid all the angst, Giffin displays her trademark ability to capture the complexities of human emotions while telling a rip-roaring tale." -Washington Post"Giffin's calling card has always been her ability to delve into the workings of relationships. But in her latest book the best-selling novelist probes deeper than ever. With intelligence, humor and piercing insight, Giffin shows that in matters of love, it is possible to be right and yet so wrong." -Family Circle"With realistic dialogue and a sharp depiction of relationships, Giffin crafts an emotional, effortless read." -More"Giffin beautifully shows how quickly need becomes love.[and her] chronicle of fluid, almost casual marital disconnect is a powerful cautionary tale." -Boston Globe"In HEART OF THE MATTER, Giffin delivers h
