Rated 4 out of 5 by from Intriguing and sinister mystery The story is a mystery from the beginning, switching between modern day and flashbacks to 1960, to gradually offer clues about what is really going on. Characters are lying and telling the truth, but which one when is the perpetual question because both answers are plausible given the information the characters (and reader along with them) have to work with. At times a character knows more than the reader but it’s rare so the uncertainty is there for most of the book and makes for riveting reading. The pace of the story and its structure are much like being on a runaway train swaying along the tracks in the dark at top speed and for a time that pace, intensity and the tension that comes with it are relentless which made the book hard to put down. This is my second time reading Catherine Lane (her short story – Tread Lightly - is excellent and very much worth a read as well as this one) and here again she’s woven a complex mystery with breadcrumbs in the form of clues that may point to the truth, or may misdirect. Having lawyers and actors making up part of the cast of characters adds to the drama that may or may not be put on as a show or con for an unsuspecting audience. It’s a terrific and surprising read the way it unfolds and weaves together gradually to the end. I was left with a few questions at the end of the book away from the primary mystery but still loved the journey the book took me on. It is mostly drama but there are a few funny quips thrown in for some variety. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more of Catherine Lane’s works in the future.
