"This story has incredible intrigue and emotional power."

--Randall Wallace, Director Heaven Is for Real, We Were Soldiers, and Secretariat

"Do you remember the hospital, Colton?" Sonja said."Yes, mommy, I remember," he said. "That''s where the angels sang to me."

When four-year-old Colton Burpo made it through an emergency appendectomy his family was overjoyed at his miraculous survival. What they weren''t expecting, though, was the story that emerged in the following months-a story as beautiful as it was extraordinary, detailing their little boy''s trip to heaven and back.

This true story, retold by his father but using Colton''s uniquely simple words, offers a glimpse of the world that awaits us, where as Colton says, "Nobody is old and nobody wears glasses."

Heaven is for Real will forever change the way you think of eternity, offering the chance to see, and believe like a child.

Bonus material in this special movie edition includes:

  • Photos from the movie set
  • Updates from father, Todd, and son, Colton, on recent events including the making-of-the-movie experience
  • "From the Set" Q&A''s with the movie''s filmmakers and actors

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heaven is for real Very uplifting book. Makes you question and feel comfort at the same time. Young children are honest in what they experience, especially at the young age of three. This is an affirmation of my belief, and I feel joyful in reading direct witness of it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heaven is for Real This book is one of the few books that every man woman and child should read. A picture of heaven that tallies with the scriptures, described as only an innocent child could tell it. It will renew your faith in Christianity, or kindle it to a blaze to warm you through the wintery nights that every individual experiences.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fantastic, encouraging read! If you’re not familiar with the story, it’s the true telling of a small-town pastor whose almost 4 year old son Colton has a near-death experience in which he claims to have seen Jesus, visited heaven, and met other various people while he was there. This time I wanted to read it together with my children, who really loved it! While I’m sure they weren’t able to fully understand and follow everything that was happening, it brought up great discussions about Jesus, heaven, and the people we will meet there some day. I believe there is also a kids edition of the book, which may be even better for reading with younger children, but my kids enjoyed it nonetheless. Some of the bonus material in this special movie edition includes photos from the movie set, updates from Todd and Colton on where they are now, as well as interviews with the filmmakers and actors. While these features are sort of neat, I can’t say they were anything particularly special to me and I wouldn’t necessarily recommend this edition over the original one. This story caused me to get choked up several times, even though it wasn’t my first time reading it. There are some beautiful truths in this book about Jesus and His heart towards us and it has ministered to me in many ways. I also don’t believe that it was a coincidence that young Colton had a father who was a pastor, who could verify his experiences with what the Bible said and who could lead him and guide him through processing what he had seen and experienced. As for some of the things I found questionable about the actual movie, I was reassured to find none of those issues in the book itself. The one movie scene that especially bothered me that presented a wish-washy gospel message that implied God would surely allow a woman’s son into heaven without necessarily requiring a belief in Jesus, was similar to a story in the book, but very different in that the movie made the woman’s son a young man that died in battle, while the true story from the book was about a woman who lost a baby due to miscarriage. To me, those are very different situations, one where a young man would have had several opportunities to learn about God and make a choice regarding his salvation and one where a baby in the womb had no opportunity to make any such choice. As for the Biblical accuracy of the book, I honestly can’t say that there was anything that stood out to me as being flagrantly contrary to the Word of God, other than perhaps Colton’s description of the saints in heaven having wings. That issue doesn’t seem to be especially heretical to me, though, and I don’t think our beliefs on that subject would affect our salvation. But there are several concerns that others have brought up about books relating a heavenly encounter, which I am going to address in a separate blog post, because this one is already getting long. :) In conclusion, I would highly recommend this book, as I believe that it will minister to you, encourage you, increase your faith, challenge you, and cause you to desire Jesus even more. If we are to judge a tree by its fruit, I believe that the fruit resulting from this book is good fruit. I believe it is causing people to reach for Jesus and to discover more about what His Word says about our eternal home. I will quote a friend of mine, who said, “…a little boy was miraculously healed and came out of his experience with a message that has brought hope, peace, wonder, excitement, thirst for God, and a thirst for more of who He is and where He is.” As I said about the movie, we should all read stories of people’s visions, dreams, or other encounters through the lens of the Scripture, weighing them against God’s Word, so I encourage you to do that with Heaven is for Real, and throw out anything that does not sit right with your spirit, and then eagerly receive the good that God has for you in it.
