about

Following the death of his ten-year-old son, physician Peter Croft embarks on a desperate, seemingly random search for a missing child, risking his sanity, even his life in a grief-induced quest. His journey propels him into the darkest reaches of human suffering and pits him squarely against an adversary whose own obsession defies all reason.

Here After is a story of love, loss, obsession and redemption, with gripping action sequences and a subtle paranormal underpinning. A compelling read from a seasoned storyteller, Costello’s sixth novel will keep you reading deep into the night.

Here After has recently been optioned for film by David Hackl, director of Saw V.

PRAISE FOR HERE AFTER:

"...Costello knows how to push readers’ most important buttons." —Kirkus Reviews (kirkusreviews.com)

"Costello knows his way around the mystery/horror genre, and he keeps the action moving and the suspense ratcheted up tight. He is very much a writer to watch..."
—Margaret Cannon, The Globe and Mail

"Sean Costello is a master of the poignancy of everyday living. In Here After he tackles a difficult subject with wit and humanity—and a couple of really good scares. It’s a father and son story that will touch your heart." —Susie Moloney, author of The Dwelling

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Here After is riveting to the end! Yet again, Sean Costello starts telling a seemingly benign and calm story then out of nowhere, "KAPOW!!" he clobbers you with the unexpected! "Here After" grabs you and throws you on a thrilling roller coaster of emotions, of the unexpected, and makes you believe in the unbelievable! Sean Costello is a masterful storyteller whose work I enjoy reading time and again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read! Sean Costello is an mazing author both of Thriller and Horror novels! This is an amazing read and I can't recommend it enough!
Date published: 2015-01-09
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Tough, old-school prose and good story. Don’t read any of Sean Costello’s books if you’re looking for one of those novels that sends the egghead crowd Ooo-ing and Aahh-ing. You know the type of book I’m talking about, the ones reviewers refer to as ‘multi-layered’ and ‘luminous’ or then tell you to ‘linger and savour’ the ‘quiet passages’. Damn, if it’s lingering and savouring you’re after then grab a slice of cheesecake and a nice cup of tea … but forget about Costello's novels because each one begins by laying down a long strip of rubber and then screams toward the far horizon. When you’re strapped into the passenger seat of one of these babies, you better hang on to the By-the-Jesus handle because you’re in for the ride of your life. And while the vector may seem like 180, you'll find the plot takes a sharp 90 before you can say boo. If you’re looking for an old-school good read, turn to Costello. Like Raymond Chandler, Elmore Leonard, Georges Simenon or John D. MacDonald, his prose is tough, his dialogue is tight and his action is swift. But hold on, just because I’m saying you can easily read his work doesn’t mean you can turn off the old brain box. I’m not accusing Costello of creating a cowboy world of white hats and black hats. Just like Stephen King, Costello creates believable protagonists with some likeable traits … and some very dark stuff happening inside their heads (dare I say, ‘souls’). Take Peter Gardner (Captain Quad), the high school wunderkind who after being paralysed descends into a hellish world of rage and blood-soaked revenge. Or how about Scott Bowman (The Cartoonist), the psychiatrist who kills a child and then falls victim to the worm of guilt that chews through his sanity? Or Peter Croft (Here After), whose obsession with finding his child’s kidnapper leads him into an alternate reality? All these guys (and they are all guys) started out ordinary but then something happened to them. But what? That’s the silent question Costello poses, just as he asks if you can draw the line between normalcy and insanity, between the brightly-lit everyday world and the nightmare. How much does it take to push us across that line? I don’t know, do you? Costello suggests all it takes is a porcupine crossing the road (Captain Quad), a sudden winter storm (Squall), a moment of inattention (The Cartoonist), or a call in the night (Eden’s Eyes). Like the anaesthetist in Eden’s Eyes, will you find yourself looking down at an inert body you’re keeping alive only long enough for the scavengers to swoop in and take the eyes, the kidneys, the….? As with Edward Albee, Costello asks if we live our lives in a delicate balance and, if so, how little might it take to tip us to the dark side?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chilling, gripping, awesome - a must-read! I've read several of Costello's books (quickly, as I can't seem to put them down until I finish them). His books are the kind that get your mind racing, wondering, what if?? If you love Koontz or King, you NEED to read Costello!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A fine, fine book! The opening chapter knocks the emotional wind out of you, and the rest of the book leaves you trying to catch your breath. The tension in the protagonist Peter Croft is palpable. How Costello manages to keep the pressure on for so many pages is a mystery. But that's what makes him a fine writer. Treat yourself and buy this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Book Until a few short hours ago I hadn't heard of Sean Costello. I started reading Here After a couple of days ago and could not put it down. You really feel for both Peter, loosing his son to leukemia and Roger to an abduction. If you enjoy edge of your seat suspense and a dash of supernatural you need to read this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "FANTASTIC" Like all of Sean Costello's books it was absolutely great. My only disappointment was that it ended too soon. It keeps your interest piqued from beginning to end. I look forward to his next (hopefully soon) publication.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Best Yet from an author witha great track record" I'm a fan of Sean Costello's books, and with Here After he's achieved his best yet. The story of great personal loss and redemption raises it above the level of a genre novel. This is a book with something to say. But it's also a top notch thriller, and you'll need all your willpower not to skip to the end. When it hits high gear in the final third of the book, it's a steamroller, and nothing can stand in its way. So you'd better book a day off work before you open these pages.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant Storyteller "Here After" is a book you cannot put down! You are instantly drawn into a bundle of emotions as the story begins. Sean developed the characters in a superb manner, so well in fact you actually felt like you were along for the ride. Many times throughout this book I could visualize myself in their situations. The story really moved me - this is the first book in years that I could not wait to turn the page to find out what was going to happen next. A compelling story from a brillliant storyteller.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Emotional and tense Costello weaves this novel thick with grief and perserverance, the driving forces that keep us moving forward in the face of horror. A stark look at the raw emotion of loss, how we cope, how we fixate in order to survive - and how it can ultimately bring closure and healing. While not entirely a work centered on horror or the supernatural, the darkness of his older works has returned full force. It is sharper and harsher in the light of day, without the genre of horror to enshroud the novel. Unapologetic, unforgiving, unrelentless: Costello's prose and pacing has matured, this but the most recent pinacle. The reader is left unable to sleep until the last page has been devoured, and then, longing for more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Utterly engrossing! With his subtle and enthralling prose, Sean helps to weave a story of the emotional complexities of a father and son relationship, touching on madness, love and loss. It is a beautiful tapestry depicting the harsh realism of everyday life and the cruelties of human nature. Comparable to Stephen King and Koontz, Here After is a page turner for anyone looking for a great read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Couldn't Put It Down!! Sean's new book is fast-paced and exciting right from the word go. I literally could not put it down, and finished it at 2:45 am, even though I had to get up at 5:30 am. If you are like me and need your books to make some semblance of sense, you won't be disappointed in this one. You also won't be forgetting David for a long, long time ... It would be wonderful if Mr. Costello had greater distribution so that the rest of the world could realize what we here in Sudbury (and Ottawa) already know -- Dr. Costello is an awesome writer of supernatural fiction!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This book got me hooked I got this book and could not put it down. In my busy everyday life I have not read many good books and was never interested in this genre. Well I am hooked and now can't get enough of the supernatural and the way Dr. Costello's writes. I can tell you that I will own everyone of his books. Can't wait to get my hands on his books. Thanks for writing and sharing with us.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The title is absolutely in line with the story. Great photo cover also. Excellent story. The introduction of Graham began the intriguing section and to the end. Touching on the supernatural made me think of The Green Mile without remembering who the author had been. I had to look it up on the computer, to no surprise it was Stephen King. It all fits. "Here After" brought back memories of stories of the supernatural my grandmother told me. Stories that in her time were believed. I am the proud owner of all Dr. Costello's books, personally autographed to me. I sincerely hope that we will see one of his books as a movie, especially this latest one as it is a heart-wrencher and an "edge of the seat " story. A number ONE mystery with great appeal to many. Thanks for writing such a great book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from wonderful as always Missed out on a nights sleep but unable to put it down absolutely spellbinding from page 1 to 315. I ve been a fan for many years and have enjoyed all his books, he never disappoints the reader. Some authors become stale and predictable over their careers but not Sean, each novel being fresh, unique and a true page turner. The book is so realistic in its geography and medical aspects, absolutely cant wait for the next novel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow! This book is amazing and it kept me on the edge of my seat all the time. The references to Sudbury and were vivid and realistic. I have been a Costello fan for over 16 years, and was so excited about the release of this novel that I planned to be one of the first to purchase it. I am honored to have a signed copy, because I feel that Mr Costello is as great as Stephen King. Mr Costello, keep up the great work, and I am anxiously awaiting your next novel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Another Grabber In Here After Sean Costello has combined everything you need for a good story: sympathetc, loveable, and very human characters, a heart-wrenching premise, desperate hope, thrills and a satisfying ending. He's a writer who should be read, and often. Start with this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved this! I read "Here After" almost in one sitting because I didn't want to stop reading it! I've read other books by this author (read "Quad!!") and they' were good too, but this is my new favourite. I've never felt so sorry for a main character ever, as I felt for Peter Croft, and I wont' tell you why, but I would marry him if he was a real guy! All the characters are so good. And while I "loved" Peter Croft, I think Roger is my favourite. The story is not just sad, but really compelling, too, with the sort of exciting of "chase" scene that was the reason i stayed up so late to finish it. The ending is so good, especially how Sean Costello wraps up the kind of "core" story. It was great. I recommend you read this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heart Touching Thriller Costello has produced a wonderfully heart-touching and terrifying thriller. He tackles an extremely difficult subject (the loss of a young child) with a realistic and straightforward approach, never forgetting the poignancy of so many dramatically different moments following such a loss. The novel opens with a dramatically shocking scene and Costello never really stops pulling the reader along. He is adept at grabbing the reader with both hands; one closes deftly around the heart, offering a touching and devastating glimpse of the loss of a child; the other propels you on a breathless quest, sometimes eagerly, the way a child might lead a parent through a fairground -- and sometimes with a startlingly quick choke hold on the windpipe. This novel is easily one of the best, most poignant books I've read this year.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from "Rivetting" I truly and thoroughly enjoyed this book. Sean Costello's writing totally captivated me and drew me in. The review B.K. has posted is what I would also say of this book. Difficult to stop reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A very compelling story... I couldn't put it down. I've been eagerly awaiting Costello's return and with Here After he has done so in a triumphant fashion!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Costello's best yet, a great book. In Here After Costello grabs you hard in the first chapter - the great part is he doesn't let you go for the rest of the book. You can't help but feel the incredible emotion of the situations, the terror as well as the love. His characters are so alive you can feel the drive they have to pursue what they need. It will scare you, but also warm your heart as you see the deep love between a father and son. A great book, you won't be able to stop reading.
Date published: 2008-10-12
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bravo Sean! From the first few pages to the last Sean Costello clearly defines the desperate love a parent has for their child. I couldn't help but be swept away. With "Here After" Sean not only encourages us to reaffirm the love we have for our own children, but also to reawaken the empathy we keep hidden from the rest of the world. In times so full of mind numbing distractions that is truly a gift.
