This is two books in one. In 1997 Ron Parrott, Richard Prime and John Williamson published Hereford United: The League Era. That era began in 1972. The 1996-97 season was supposed to mark a silver jubilee, 25 glorious years in the Football League. But the Bulls roller-coaster came off the rails on an afternoon forever etched in the minds of those who endured it. Saturday, 3 May 1997 was a day Herefordians would never forget. Yet once admitted to the League, the upstarts had prospered, sprinting through the divisions to rub shoulders with the likes of Chelsea, Blackburn and Southampton in the old Second Division. Trophies were won along the way the Third Division championship in 1976 and, an oddity for an English club, the Welsh Cup in 1990. But the 1990s were hard on United. Three times they survived re-election to the Football League, only to lose their precious status in gladiatorial circumstances. In 2006, the three authors published Hereford United: The Wilderness Years, celebrating the Bulls return to the Football League after a nine-year absence. Herefords first six years in the Conference suggested they might never climb back up. In the seventh, Aldershot dashed their play-off dreams. In the eighth, Stevenage wielded the knife. In the ninth, Hereford finally dispatched Halifax and waved goodbye to the wilderness years. And two years later, more joy. Promotion from the Leagues fourth tier to the third, which is where this book ends.
