Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hop on Pop A collection of ambitious short stories dealing with loss and redemption. The title story explores the inevitable loss of innocence that is part of growing up. Told through the eyes of two children who spend their days in a carefree paradise of walking and talking, the narrative takes us on a journey of abrupt change and sudden truths. When told by their father that they must no longer hop on him (executed with a jarring break in meter), the children open their eyes for the first time, literally as well as spiritually. They become adults and fade from the story never to appear again.

Three-letter words and incessant rhyming scatter themselves across Hop on Pop like steps on which children can ascend the reading ladder. The silly verses brim with jubilant energy, leaving kids to follow the trail of letters as it streams across insanely imaginative, panoramic illustrations. Dr. Seuss does his best to make the language fun, combining word recognition with phonetics to trigger and stimulate the learning process. Hop on Pop is much more than a primer though, it’s a gateway into what will be a more wonderful world of words.
