Rated 4 out of 5 by from Graphic portrayal of demonic possession! Hostage to the Devil is a horrifying presentation of five victims of demonic possession and the war of wills that ensues during their exorcisms. The late Fr. Martin describes with expert precision, the circumstances that lead to each possession with a style that is masterful. It gives clear insight into the awesome, horrifying power and cleaver tricks used by demons in order to frighten, discourage and defeat exorcists. The five stories describe the circumstances, errors, and events that lead the victims to demonic possession in a manner that will draw the reader into the very lives of the participants making this more than a mere dry or sensationalistic description of various exorcisms. The author presents the Rite of Exorcism at the end of the book and carefully warns that exorcisms must be attended to with care and proper church authority. Some may wish to read this sitting upright in a well lit room, the book in one hand and a bottle of holy water in the other. The text is vivid, forceful, explicit and disturbing. I do not recommend it for the faint of heart, nor for young impressionable readers.

Editorial Reviews

Hostage to the Devil is the first and only textbook on the subject of possession and exorcism in modern times. It is the only work to describe the stages of exorcism and it is obviously based on an enormous amount of personal experience. ... a brilliant work.”
