Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great info, rough presentation If the quality of the information a book contains were the only criterion used to rate that book, then John Palmer’s “How to Brew” would get an easy 5 stars. Let me be clear: anybody who follows the teachings of this book will be well on their way to brewing great beer at home. This is not in question. So, why the mediocre rating? In a “how to” book, isn’t the quality of the information all that matters? No, not to me. The information is important, but so is the flow of that information. When you watch a movie and you see an actor’s hair suddenly changing arrangement, or props inexplicably jumping around to different locations when the camera angle changes, it is distracting. Such obvious artifacts of editing pull you out of the experience, and that is where “How to Brew” suffers a little bit. From what I gather, “How to Brew” started out as a freely available web-based dossier on the author’s website, but has gradually been fleshed out over time, eventually being published as a proper book. Those humble internet roots show themselves time and again when reading “How to Brew” in a linear fashion. I lost count of the number of paragraphs that were obviously shoehorned in-line with older information, without adequate consideration for how those new paragraphs flow with the surrounding content. Passages are unnecessarily repeated in short succession with only slight changes in wording, and some paragraphs just abruptly end without proper resolution. The result is the literary equivalent of a pot-hole laden road that has been hastily patched and repaired over time, rather than getting the comprehensive re-build it needs. In short, this book contains excellent information, but it is in dire need of a once-over by a skilled editor. If a free web-based book contains rough edges, that is fine, but if that work gets bundled up and sold as a digital book, it is rightfully going to be held to a higher standard of fit and finish.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from For beginners This book is definately a MUST HAVE for beginners. Being somewhat more experienced than a beginner, I got little use out of it.
