about

Shortlisted for the 2017 Scotiabank Giller Prize!

A tender but lively debut novel about a man, a woman, and their Chevrolet dealer.

Agathe and Réjean Lapointe are about to celebrate their twentieth wedding anniversary when Réjean's beloved Chevy Silverado is found abandoned at the side of the road--with no trace of Réjean. Agathe handles her grief by fondling the shirts in the Big and Tall department at Hickey's Family Apparel and carrying on a relationship with a cigarette survey. As her hope dwindles, Agathe falls in with her spirited coworker, Debbie, who teaches Agathe about rock and roll, and with Martin Bureau, the one man who might know the truth about Réjean's fate. Set against the landscape of rural Acadia, I Am a Truck is a funny and moving tale about the possibilities and impossibilities of love and loyalty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worthy of Giller Nomination I thought the writing was excellent - clear and uncluttered. The storyline was captivating, and I for one, liked that it was short. These days I find that fiction is longer than it needs to be. Worthy of the nomination.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good book A very good book. Most impressive is the fact that it's from a small press and still managed to be shortlisted for the Giller.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit disappointed I had high expectations for this book after hearing the author speak. The writing was short and sweet, and the inclusion of french was welcomed! However, the book is so short that I found it to be a bit anti-climatic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I HOPE that this book WINS the 2017 GILLER Prize!!! LOVE THIS STORY. I love everything about this book. The writing provides real images inside my head. Images that are entertaining and emotionally powerful, in clever ways. The French dialogue in this book is exactly the way that it is spoken in New Brunswick and also in Prince Edward Island. In real life, not all French dialogue sounds the same to the ear. French as an example in Quebec differs from Paris, France. Throughout Canada, depending where you live...the French in Ontario differs greatly from Quebec. I have been to all these places that I am comparing in my review...the author is a PRO at making French within her setting come alive in a such an authentic way. I LOVE that the main character speaks in such a down to earth manner. A FANTASTIC STORY WITH LOTS OF SUSPENSE. *******WOW!*****
